The University of Navarra ( Spanish Universidad de Navarra , Latin Universitas Studiorum Navarrensis ) is a private university under ecclesiastical law with its headquarters in Pamplona , Spain , which is run as the corporate apostolate of the Catholic Personal Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei . The University's Grand Chancellor is the respective Opus Dei leader ( prelate since 1982 ) in Rome.
It should not be confused with the National University of Navarra ( Universidad Pública de Navarra ), founded in 1987 .
history
The college was founded in 1952 as the “Studium Generale von Navarre”; In 1960 it was given its current name. Josemaría Escrivá , the founder and chief director of Opus Dei , made the decision to found his own university in Spain . It was built on his instructions by Ismael Sánchez Bella (1922-2018), a Spanish legal historian who had belonged to Opus Dei since 1940. He was the first rector of the university from 1954 to 1960 and remained its vice rector until 1986.
University
After the establishment of a medical faculty in 1954, a university clinic was built in 1960. The Center for Applied Medical Research (CIMA) also belongs to the medical research area . Since 1958 the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Empresa (IESE) has offered further training for top managers in an international environment. IESE is based in Barcelona with branches in Madrid , New York , Munich and São Paulo . In San Sebastian , the Escuela Superior de Ingenería and the Instituto Superior de Secretariado y Administración offer courses in administrative sciences, and management and management assistants have been trained at the Instituto Superior de la Universidad de Navarra (ISSA) since 1964 .
The university is involved in various partner universities in Argentina , Colombia , Chile , Italy , Mexico , Peru , Venezuela , Uruguay and the Philippines .
Up to the year 2000, around 4,600 doctoral theses had been written at the university and over 55,000 students had received degrees. The supervision quota is one professor and six students.
The university offers study opportunities in 27 undergraduate subjects as well as in over 300 postgraduate programs.
students
The University of Navarra (Universidad de Navarra) has a total of 11,988 students (including 3,378 international students); 8552 are enrolled for a bachelor's or diploma course, 1323 are master's students and 1057 are doctoral students. The university also has 428 agreements with other universities, including Columbia University, the University of Hong Kong (China) and Oxford University (UK).
Criticism regarding dealing with homosexuality
The university is exposed to regular international criticism from science and society regarding its handling of homosexuality . Scientists at the University of Navarra have been trying for several decades, sometimes using pseudoscientific methods , to generate evidence that homosexuality is a disease . Furthermore, the Catholic University employs scientists and doctors in its teaching operations as well as in its university clinic who are convinced that homosexuality can be cured . In particular, because the World Health Organization made it clear in 1990 that homosexuality is not a disease, as well as advanced sex education, the radical positions of researchers at the University of Navarra regularly cause outrage among national and international scientists. In August 2019, the Navarre Catholic University Hospital in Spain made headlines after blaming homosexuality as a factor in gastroenteritis .
