Early history

As early as the Roman era in AD 50, the Via Claudia was the first Roman road coming from Füssen through the village in the direction of Augsburg . The Roman legionaries built their first settlements along the road and the Lech . Coins and shards tell from this time, while the first documentary mention comes from the year 1126.

The Lords of Diezzen gave the village their name. The name Diezzen comes either from the Old High German Diuzan = from an uplifting mountain, or from the Middle High German Tosen and thus describes the place next to a roaring brook. The family coat of arms of the Diezzen shows the shield golden, tinned at an angle, which was the basis for today's municipal coat of arms.

Incorporations

On March 1, 1925, the previously independent municipality of Dornstetten was incorporated.

Attractions

The Unterdießen Castle rises above the village , the current structure of which was only built in the late Middle Ages (1589) by the Freyberg family.

The townscape is shaped by the three churches in the three districts: St. Nikolaus (18th century) in Unterdießen, St. Rupert (15th century) in Oberdießen and St. Gangwolf (15th century) in Dornstetten. Numerous old secular buildings also determine the character of the place, e.g. B. the old mill in Dornstetten (1611) or the Oberdießen schoolhouse (1857).

Museums

The Malura Museum in the Oberdießen district offers works by the Munich painter Oswald Malura, which change every year. Malura came to Oberdießen in 1955 through his friend Franz Hauber, bought a piece of land and built a studio there, in which he worked and taught regularly. In 1977 he bought an old farmhouse at Mühlweg 2 in Oberdießen, which he renovated and used as a museum and as a “house of encounter and cultural meeting point for like-minded people”. The Malura Museum is housed in this house today.
