Ursula Happe

Ursula Happe , née Krey (born October 20, 1926 in Danzig , Free City of Danzig ) is a former German swimmer .

Her greatest achievement was winning the gold medal in the 200m chest at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne ; she also held the world record for this distance. Two years earlier she won gold in the 200 m breaststroke and bronze in the 100 m butterfly at the European Championships in 1954 . In addition, she won 18 German championship titles in various disciplines.

In 1954 and 1956 she was voted Sportswoman of the Year in Germany . In 1997 she was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .

Ursula Happe is the mother of the former national handball player Thomas Happe .
