Vienna Blood (working title Liebermann ) is a three-part British - Austrian miniseries by the directors Robert Dornhelm (Part 1) and Umut Dağ (Part 2 and 3) with Matthew Beard as doctor and psychoanalyst Max Liebermann and Juergen Maurer as detective Oskar Rheinhardt. The script by Stephen Thompson is based on the Liebermann crime novels by Frank Tallis . The first broadcast took place on November 18, 2019 on BBC Two , the first part of The Last Séance was shown on ORF on December 20, 2019. In Germany, the series is to be shown on ZDF .

Filming for the second season was originally scheduled to start in April 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , these were initially postponed to late summer 2020.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Vienna was the city of personalities such as Sigmund Freud , Arthur Schnitzler , Gustav Klimt and Gustav Mahler , ruled by anti-Semitic politicians. In the Viennese coffee houses , philosophy, science and art are discussed; the psychoanalysis initiated by Freud is still in its infancy.

The young doctor Max Liebermann, a fine spirit plagued by doubts, is a student of Freud. The Viennese detective Oskar Rheinhardt has to deal with a bizarre murder case, in the course of the investigation he comes into contact with Liebermann. Together Rheinhardt and Liebermann form a successful team of investigators.

Production and Background

The shooting of the first episode, The Last Séance, took place from October 15 to November 16, 2018 in Vienna and the surrounding area. Part two and three were filmed from February 11th to April 12th, 2019.

The production was supported by the Vienna Film Fund , the Austrian TV Fund and the Province of Lower Austria , and the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation and ZDF were involved . In 2019 the BBC acquired the rights.

The series was produced by the Austrian MR Film and the British Endor Productions, in which Red Arrow Studios are involved. Peter Christelis was responsible for the cut, Thomas Oláh for the costume design, Bertram Reiter for the equipment and Michaela Payer for the make-up.

The film was shot in English ; the German-speaking actors synchronized themselves for the German-language version.

The first episode, Vienna Blood - The Last Séance , was watched by an average of 1.8 million viewers when it first aired on BBC Two on November 18, 2019, with a market share of nine percent.

The Guardian wrote about Vienna Blood : "So much like Sherlock it seems like a spoof".
