2020 United States presidential primary election results
This page lists the results of the 2020 presidential primaries in the United States .
In addition to the two big parties, the Democrats and the Republicans , some small parties also hold regular primaries. Their ultimately nominated candidates are considered to have no chance. Including the Electoral College electors from states with the option of write-in , an election of the presidential candidate of the Green Party , the Libertarian Party or the Constitution Party would have been possible in 2012 - without write-in only the candidate of the former two.
Delegates
The parties in the United States determine their respective presidential candidates at one taking place in an election year, the national party conference ( Party Convention ). Each state sends there (depending on the population more or less) delegates , in turn, are determined based on the results of the local primaries. Depending on how many votes the respective applicants have received, they are assigned a corresponding number of delegates who are to vote for them at the party congress and are therefore referred to as "committed delegates". The primaries themselves are organized differently depending on the state, but can basically be divided into caucus (state party congress) and primary (public code).
Since 1982 there have also been so-called “ super delegates ” among Democrats . These do not emerge from the primaries, but are mostly incumbents and party officials. The Republicans have a similar system of “non-obligatory delegates”. Both uncommitted delegates and super-delegates are free in their choice of candidate, which makes predictions difficult. The assignment is based on published statements of support (endorsement) by the delegates. Not everyone gives one and can also change your mind, as the endorsements are non-binding. In the case of the Democrats, the superdelegates only have the right to vote if no candidate received the required majority in the first vote.
Due to the provisions of the US electoral law, small parties are not entitled to vote in primary elections in every state. So u. a. Requires a signature list with at least 500 supporters. As a result, no small party has yet managed to hold primaries in more than 10 countries. In small states, this is difficult to achieve even for the two largest small parties, for example the Libertarian Party in New Hampshire only had 110 members in early 2020. In 2020, the Libertarian Party is eligible for primary elections in around 20 states, but does not hold them everywhere. This is possible after the democrats and libertarians jointly filed a lawsuit in 1996 against the obligation to hold a primary election and won the process. Both Republicans and libertarians made use of this won right in Arizona in 2020 . The Libertarian Party's primary elections are non-binding, and victory in as many states as possible increases the likelihood of ultimately being nominated.

Individual results of the states
Candidates who have withdrawn their application are marked in the following area codes.
All percentages are rounded. Only candidates who received at least 0.1% of the vote are listed.
The number of delegates is determined according to the proportion of votes in the primaries and caucuses (conventions) as well as according to complicated pre-election guidelines that differ from state to state.

Other parties
Eight other parties are running for presidential candidates, some of which are supported by other parties. None of the parties appear on the ballot in enough countries to at least theoretically win the presidential election.
Only the Constitution Party is authorized to use area codes in several states. In 15–17 states it appears on the ballot paper, which at least theoretically allows access to 135–156 of the 538 voters of the Electoral College (excluding states with write-in). The Green candidate Howie Hawkins - who is registered for Peace and Freedom in California - also ran for the Peace and Freedom Party .
