Distribution of seats in the new state parliament

A total of 90 seats

Since the re-establishment of the state (from 1993: Free State) of Thuringia in 1990, seven elections to the Thuringian state parliament have been held.

The CDU was able to assert itself as the strongest party in the first six elections. In the first four state elections, your election results were between 42 and 51 percent of the second votes cast. The SPD was initially the second strongest party in the state parliament, but its election results have fallen behind the results of the PDS since 1999, so that in the meantime Die Linke (formerly: PDS ) was the second strongest force in the state parliament. It was able to increase its vote in every election and became the strongest party in Thuringia in 2019.

From 1994 to 2009 only three parties were represented in the state parliament: CDU, PDS (or Die Linke) and SPD. At times, the FDP (1990 to 1994, 2009 to 2014) and Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen (1990 to 1994, since 2009) had mandates in the state parliament. In 2014, the AfD moved into the state parliament for the first time . After the FDP re-entered the state parliament in the 2019 election, a total of 6 parties sit in parliament.

The CDU tends to be stronger in rural areas, while the SPD and Die Linke achieve their highest results in the larger cities. Green strongholds are the cities of Jena and Weimar , Die Linke is particularly strong in East Thuringia and in the cities of Suhl and Gera . A CDU stronghold is Eichsfeld , the only larger Catholic region in Thuringia and home to the former Prime Minister Dieter Althaus (CDU). The AfD is particularly strong in the southeastern constituencies and won a total of eleven direct mandates in 2019. In the big cities, the AfD is relatively weak.

The seat of the Thuringian state parliament is the state capital Erfurt .

1920-1933

1945–1952

Between 1945 and 1952, semi-free state elections were held in 1946 (see state elections in the Soviet Zone in 1946 ) and in 1950 sham elections (see state elections in the GDR in 1950 ). In 1952 the state of Thuringia and with it the state parliament was dissolved.
