etymology

What is certain is that the determiner Wester- is a family name . The origin of the suffix -burg is unclear . However, there is much to suggest that there was a building with very thick, quarry stone walls in the former court , which the residents called a castle due to its massive construction . It is probably about the today plastered house Westerburg 5. The name Westersburg was derived from the castle of the Wester family, which was transferred to the entire courtyard and later became the official street name.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1811. He belonged to the Itter Honschaft within the Solingen office. The topographical survey of the Rhineland from 1824 lists the place as not yet labeled and the Prussian first survey from 1844 lists it as a Westerburg . In the topographic map of the Düsseldorf administrative district from 1871, the location is shown without any labels.

After the founding of mairies and later mayors early 19th century Westerburg belonged to the mayor's forest , there he was in the corridor II. ( Wood ) .1815 / 16 lived 24 in 1830, 27 people in a hamlet called Westerburg . In 1832 the place was part of the first village honors within the forest mayor's office. The place, categorized as Hofstadt according to the statistics and topography of the Düsseldorf government district , had five residential buildings and three agricultural buildings at that time. At that time 29 residents lived in the place, two of them Catholic and 27 Protestant denominations. The municipality and estate district statistics of the Rhine Province list the place in 1871 with 14 houses and 65 inhabitants. In the municipality lexicon for the Rhineland province from 1888, 18 houses with 138 inhabitants are given for Westersburg. In 1895 the district had 24 houses with 180 inhabitants, in 1905 33 houses and 335 inhabitants are given.

The origins of today's Westersburg elementary school lie in the Lindersberg private school founded in 1839. Due to a lack of public schools in the upper Itter district, some parents took care of setting up one themselves. This happened with the establishment of the Lindersberg School, which was initially housed in a private hedgehog forest house, before a year later a schoolhouse was built on Lindersberg. After several changes of location in the area, the Westersburg elementary school was inaugurated in 1891 at what was then Eschbachstraße 14 in Westersburg. The Westersburg elementary school is housed in the original building, which was located at Bausmühlenstraße 14 after the street was renamed in 1975.

There was a restaurant in Westersburg since around 1830 . At the turn of the century, perhaps around 1905, a new inn was built. It is a castle-like complex with a crenellated tower, which in the early days still had a hall extension. The extension was demolished in 1984 and the building now houses a residential building. It is related to the construction Address Mühlenstraße 21 since January 10, 1985 under monument protection .

With the town union of Groß-Solingen in 1929, Westersburg became a district of Solingen. In addition to the former inn, the ensemble of half-timbered houses, some of which have been sold, Bausmühlenstraße 6, 8, 10 and 12 has been a listed building since 1984 .
