What's My Name is the 36th album, or the 20th studio album by Ringo Starr after the Beatles split up . It was released in the UK, Germany and the US on October 25, 2019.
History of origin
Since the recording of his studio album Y Not , Ringo Starr took over the responsible role of the first producer ; at Ringo in 2012 he was the first sole producer, which he continued with the album Postcards from Paradise , Give More Love and What's My Name .
The exact recording times for the What's My Name album are not documented. As with the previous albums, the studio recordings were made in the Rocca Bella Studio, which is located in a Ringo Starr guest house in Los Angeles , and the musicians were recorded depending on the availability of the individual artists.
As with the previous album Give More Love , this album once again featured prominent musicians. It worked, among others, Joe Walsh , Paul McCartney , Colin Hay , Dave Stewart and Steve Lukather with.
In addition to the ballad Grow Old with Me , the album contains mostly rock-oriented pieces of music.
Ringo Starr happened to meet Jack Douglas who was the producer of the John Lennon / Yoko Ono album Double Fantasy in 1980. Douglas asked Starr if he had ever heard the music cassette with the John Lennon demos, Starr said no, so Douglas later gave him the songs on CD. Ringo Starr decided to record Grow Old with Me , which originally appeared as a demo version on the Lennon / Ono album Milk and Honey , himself. Jack Douglas (arranger of the string accompaniment) and Paul McCartney (bass and background vocals) contributed musically to the version by Starr.
Since the last musical collaboration between the two ex-Beatles on the 2017 album Give More Love , Ringo Starr played the song Get Back with Paul McCartney on December 16, 2018 at the O 2 Arena in London and on July 13, 2019 at Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles the songs Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) and Helter Skelter during two McCartney concerts.
The Beatles recorded the song Money (That's What I Want) for the 1963 album With the Beatles , Ringo Starr recorded a new version for his album.
Colin Hay, longtime member of the Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band , composed the title song of the album. Starr was the composer or co-composer of the remaining seven of the ten songs on the album.
Since Goodnight Vienna, What's My Name has reached its highest chart position in Germany to date.
Ringo Starr said in retrospect about his musical career: “When I was a teenager, my mom always said, 'Son, you're at your happiest when you're playing.' And it's still true to this day. "
What's My Name is Ringo Starr's sixth album to be released by Universal .
