City bus traffic in Coburg is operated by SÜC Bus und Aquaria GmbH on nine main lines and one on-call bus line. There are also 20 so-called additional buses in school traffic. The number of passengers recently fell from around 4.8 million in 2017 to around 4.6 million in 2018. In 2012, however, only around 4.4 million passengers used the SÜC city buses.

Infrastructure

The administration and the depot for the city buses are located on Bamberger Straße. It was inaugurated in 2001 together with Omnibusverkehr Franken GmbH and offers space for around 60 buses. The fleet currently contains 42 low-floor city buses, 15 of which run on natural gas .

Since 2006, all newly purchased buses have been ordered with air conditioning. At the end of 2009, 30 buses were equipped with double screens for passenger information, with the next five stops on the left and a mix of current news and advertising on the right. The city buses newly acquired in 2010 also each received a double screen.

history

The year 1939 was the hour of birth of the Coburg city bus service and thus also of local transport in Coburg. In the first month of traffic, 9,500 passengers were already counted. The traffic continued to grow until the beginning of the Second World War , but had to be stopped in 1945 because the buses were used for other purposes for military service. In 1947 an attempt was made to re-establish traffic using a trolleybus route. However, this project failed due to the shortage of materials. It was not until November 15, 1948, that regular service could be resumed with two Bussings and one Mercedes . From then on, the route network and the vehicle fleet grew steadily.

Today's network, around 102 kilometers long, leads across the city limits to the municipalities of Niederfüllbach , Lautertal , Dörfles-Esbach and Ahorn .

As part of the partial update of the local transport plan for the city of Coburg, the network of city buses established over many years was expanded and redesigned in several places.

Since September 10, 2017, the Oberlauter district of Lautertal has been connected to the city bus network by line 2 . Since January 1, 2019, the Coburg freight yard and thus also the nearby new gymnasium on the Anger, as well as various branches of retail companies in the daily network of the SÜC, have been connected by the lines 6 and 66 .

In order to continuously connect the Friedrich Streib campus of the Coburg University of Applied Sciences in the daily network with the train station and the city center at 15-minute intervals, the route of line 5 was rerouted via the Thuringian district. For this, the operation of the branch line 7A was stopped. The Design Campus in the Hofbrauhaus Coburg is served by lines 2 and 3 every 15 minutes during the day. At Theaterplatz there is now the scheduled option of changing to a line that goes to the other university location in the daily network.

As a decentralized junction of lines 2 , 3 , 10 and 8318 , the HUK-Coburg-arena stop connects the commercial area on the Lauterer Höhe every 15 minutes with the city center and the train station.

On November 4, 2019, line 3 was extended to Rödental station during the week. So far, only Rosenau Castle has been used on Sundays and public holidays. In the course of this expansion, the new tariff zone 3 was introduced. This applies to all SÜC stops within the city of Rödental. However, there is no collective bargaining agreement with the Rödental city bus. For the time being there will only be four pairs of trips a day.

9 City center - main station - Neuses - Beiersdorf - Callenberg Castle Today it is served by line 5 . The ZOB didn't exist back then. The misnomer " Hauptbahnhof " used to apply to all lines and is still used today as an addition to the name at the bus stop in Kanalstrasse.
10 City center - Rosenau Castle Direct trip from the market square to Rosenau Castle on Sundays and public holidays. Served today by line 3 . There was a special tariff for all passengers.
11 For a short time in the nineties, the established diameter lines were divided into two radial lines each. For example, the diameter line 6 Heimatring - Stadtmitte - Neue Heimat was divided into the two radial lines 6 Stadtmitte - Heimatring - Stadtmitte and 16 Stadtmitte - Neue Heimat - Stadtmitte . The same scheme applied to the other main lines.

Sometimes there was a seamless transition according to the traditional diameter lines (in the example, line 6 became line 16 and then again line 6 ), but other line crossings were created for a few trips when there were gaps in the intervals. Ultimately, diameter lines were used again, which have remained almost unchanged to this day.

Regional bus

A MAN NÜ 313 CNG of the DB Frankenbus at the Coburg central bus station

In the district of Coburg there are currently 15 regional bus routes operated by the OVF, 7 of which go to the central bus station (ZOB) of the city of Coburg. In addition, several localities in the district are connected by the Thuringian WerraBus GmbH and the OVG. The cities of Rödental and Neustadt bei Coburg have their own city buses. Within the city of Coburg, the SÜC and OVF tickets are mutually recognized, otherwise there is no tariff community in the district.

history

Before September 1, 2016, some communities in the districts of Hildburghausen , Sonneberg , Kronach , Lichtenfels , Bamberg and Haßberge were also approached from the city of Coburg. However, this offer has largely been discontinued as part of the 4th local transport plan of the city and district of Coburg. According to the new concept, the city of Coburg (in its function as regional center) is no longer the sole focus, but also the lower and middle centers along the two regional railway lines in the district. An additional dial-a-bus service has been set up for these communities . Otherwise, the lines run every hour during the week, but others only run sporadically or only on school days.

Bus rendezvous Theaterplatz and ZOB Coburg

Overview of the ZOB Coburg
Dynamic passenger information display, still in test operation

The central transfer stop for city buses has been Theaterplatz since December 2007. The rendezvous stop, which was the first stop to be equipped with a dynamic passenger information system, is designed for twelve buses and is only served by SÜC lines.

In autumn 2007, construction began on the central bus station (ZOB) with twelve stopping places and three waiting places. Completion was scheduled for the end of 2008, but was delayed until the end of August 2009. The ZOB is intended to link the three local transport products rail , city bus and regional bus and thus make local transport in Coburg more attractive.

Local rail transport

There are three railway lines in the Coburg area:

On the route Weiden - Bad Rodach via Bayreuth, Lichtenfels and Coburg, the Agilis private railway has also been running every hour since June 12, 2011 .

Since the start of the E-Netz Franken in December 2011 by DB Regio, regional express trains have been running every hour on the route Sonneberg - Coburg - Lichtenfels - Bamberg - Erlangen - Nuremberg . In the morning and in the afternoon, additional trains run between Coburg & Sonneberg, creating an approximate 40/20/40 cycle.

Joined the transport association for the greater Nuremberg area (VGN)

The 3rd local transport plan for the city and district of Coburg envisaged a possible accession of the city and district of Coburg to the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN) in 2014. The main objective was to create a uniform tariff association for the entire Nuremberg metropolitan region . On December 14, 2012, the Coburg city council and the district council decided against Coburg joining the VGN, as the benefits for the population resulting from joining would be too small compared to the expected additional costs. Coburg's accession to the VGN on January 1, 2014 was therefore not realized. With reference to the government declaration by the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder in April 2018 to create a uniform ticket for local public transport and uniform network structures throughout Bavaria, the district council is currently examining again whether the district should join the VGN.
