The 1988/89 season of the Austrian Ice Hockey League was played with six clubs. A club from Innsbruck, the GEV Innsbruck , became champions for the seventh time .
Participant field and mode
The field of participants changed only slightly compared to the previous season. The Salzburg EC no longer took part in the league, which left only six teams, as last year's national league champion SV Kapfenberg did without promotion. This time the EV Innsbruck competed under the sponsor name Gösser EV Innsbruck (or in short: GEV Innsbruck ).
The six clubs played against each other four times in the regular season. All clubs qualified for the final round, which also consisted of four rounds, with the first four clubs receiving 4, 3, 2 or 1 bonus points. The four best clubs qualified for the final round. It was the last season in which the playoff format was a championship round in the mode everyone against everyone . In the following seasons, the North American KO system should be used.
