The 1st Soccer Amateur League Southwest 1977/78 was the 26th and final season of the third class 1st amateur league in regional men's soccer in the southern part of Rhineland-Palatinate and a predecessor of the Soccer Association Southwest . The 1st Amateur League Southwest was formed in 1952 by amalgamating the amateur leagues Rheinhessen , West Palatinate and Front Palatinate and existed until the 1978/79 season as the third highest league. After the introduction of the Oberliga Südwest in 1978 as the highest amateur league, the league was renamed "Verbandsliga Südwest" and was only fourth class from that point on.

The championship was won by FSV Mainz 05 , which had no success in the promotion round to the 2nd Bundesliga South and had to remain in the league. Eintracht Kreuznach was allowed to take part in the German amateur football championship as a Southwest representative , but was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the amateurs from Eintracht Frankfurt .
FSV Mainz 05, Hassia Bingen , Eintracht Kreuznach, Südwest Ludwigshafen and the amateurs of 1. FC Kaiserslautern qualified for the newly created third-class Oberliga Südwest . The remaining clubs up to 16th place played in the newly created fourth-class Association League Southwest from the following season .
SV Guntersblum and FV Speyer had to go to the 2nd amateur league . For the following association league season 1978/79 came as climbers from the 2nd amateur leagues of Ludwigshafener SC , SG 05 Pirmasens , SV Horchheim and VfR Baumholder .
