David Adam Smith (born June 15, 1965 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician who has been a member of the US House of Representatives for the Democratic Party since 1997 , where he represents the 9th  Congressional constituency of Washington state .

biography

Adam Smith grew up in Washington state and graduated from Seattle high school in 1983 . He then studied law at the University of Washington , graduated in 1990 and was employed as a prosecutor for the city of Seattle from 1993 to 1995. In the meantime he also practiced as a lawyer. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party. Between 1991 and 1996 he was a member of the Washington Senate .

In the 1996 congressional elections, he was elected as his party's candidate in the ninth electoral district of Washington state in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1997. As he was re-elected in all subsequent elections, including the one in 2016, he can continue to exercise his mandate today. His latest legislative term runs until January 3, 2019. His time as a congressman included the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan . Adam Smith is or was a ranking member of the Armed Forces Committee . He is also a member of several Congressional Caucuses . He is considered moderate and heads the organization New Democrat Coalition . Smith didn't always agree with the official party line. For example, in October 2002 he was one of 81 Democrats who voted for the Iraq war.
