history

The place was founded at the beginning of the 19th century by residents from Mavrodin and Zimnicea . In 1834, designed according to plans by Moritz von Ott (also incorrectly named Otto von Moritz) - who also planned the cities of Brăila and Giurgiu as well as in Turnu Severin with Xavier Villacrosse - the place was named after the gospodar Alexandru Ghica , who issued the charter in 1834 . Ghica's remains are kept in a sarcophagus in Sfântul Alexandru Cathedral . In 1968, after the re-establishment of today's Teleorman district, Alexandria became its capital and in 1979 it became a municipality .
