Arches ( Occitan Archas ) is a French municipality with 181 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Cantal in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes (before 2016 Auvergne ); it belongs to the arrondissement of Mauriac and the canton of Ydes (until 2015 Mauriac ). The inhabitants are called Archoux .

geography

Arches is located in the foothills of the Monts-du-Cantal massif, about 42 kilometers north-northwest of Aurillac . The Dordogne river limits the municipality to the north and west. Arches is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Sérandon in the north, Veyrières in the east and northeast, Jaleyrac and Sourniac in the east and southeast, Chalvignac in the south and southwest and Neuvic in the west and northwest.
