The municipality belongs to the Cantal department , the Mauriac arrondissement and is part of the canton of Naucelles (until 2015 Salers ).

Saint-Chamant is located about twenty kilometers north of Aurillac in the Massif Central . Saint-Chamant is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Saint-Martin-Valmeroux in the north, Saint-Projet-de-Salers in the east, Saint-Cernin in the south and Saint-Cirque-de-Malbert in the west.
