Barrick Gold Corporation is the world's largest gold mining company with annual production of over 7 million ounces or approximately 200 tons of gold . The head office is in Toronto ; the company is listed in the S & P / TSX 60 stock index on the Toronto Stock Exchange and has the largest position in the most important industry index, the NYSE Arca Gold BUGS index .

The company was founded in 1978 by Peter Munk (1927-2018) as Barrick Petroleum and went public in 1983 as Barrick Gold . On January 20, 2006 Barrick Gold acquired the majority of the shares in the Canadian competitor Placer Dome . Barrick Gold overtook its US competitor Newmont Mining Corporation and took the lead among gold producers. In addition to gold, the company also mines silver and copper.

Projects

Barrick Gold is developing a gold mine on Donlin Creek in southwest Alaska with NovaGold , a mining company based in Vancouver , British Columbia . 2018 were to EIAs ( Environmental Impact Statement ) conducted one of the conditions for the pending regulatory approval.

In Chile, a project was stopped because of massive environmental problems and the company has to pay a fine of 16.4 million dollars.
