history

The place name originated from an ancient word for turnpike / lifting tree (Böerbaum). One of these was already located centuries ago on the old connecting route from Lüdenscheid and Herscheid in what is now Bierbaum's area. The checkpoint was used by the rulers, the Counts of Mark for the levying of duties on the precincts limit of Lüdenscheid, which went far. In 1832 a regular stagecoach connection was established from Lüdenscheid via Herscheid to Plettenberg , and in 1846/1847 today's Herscheider Landstrasse was expanded as a road over about 15 km to the neighboring town . This means that it was fortified according to the latest developments in road construction at the time and planted with an avenue . By the First World War, a street settlement with several individual residential buildings developed in Bierbaum. The Bierbaum elementary school was also built, the building of which is still preserved. It served the surrounding farms and hamlets in the Lüdenscheid-Land community as a country school. Today there is a Lüdenscheid IT company in the building of the former Bierbaum elementary school .

From October 1953, a larger settlement of the same name was created on the Brutenberg southeast of the old Bierbaum, which today is mainly associated with the place name. Today's Bierbaum Community Primary School was built during the construction work . In November 1959 the Evangelical Apostle Church followed as a new building, which was built almost directly next to the school. By 1961, the Brutenberg was almost completely built on. Until 1969 Bierbaum was part of the municipality Lüdenscheid-Land, Amt Lüdenscheid , and was then incorporated into the city of Lüdenscheid. After the construction of the federal motorway 45 through the southern urban area, the Herscheider Landstrasse became the motorway feeder . As a result, in the mid-1970s, the historic avenue was partly expanded to include multiple lanes. The street settlement Bierbaum was preserved.

Infrastructure

With the construction of the settlement, the Evangelical Apostle Church with community center and the Bierbaum community elementary school were built on the central, inclined area . In the mid-1950s a gym followed and in 1973 the Protestant kindergarten “Unterm Himmelszelt”. A small square to the east of the main entrance to the church was designed as a shopping center with several retail shops and dining facilities, so that the Bierbaum settlement formed a sub-center for the first decades of its existence . In the 1980s, however, a grocery store, an inn and a hairdresser and a café were closed.

The Bierbaum Community Primary School was completely renovated from 1991 to 1993 and a new administrative wing was added. It has now become an all-day school. In addition, a new gymnasium was built on the primary school premises, which is used in particular by the "TuS Bierbaum" association as a home . In addition, the Apostle Church received a new parish hall in 1992. The Protestant kindergarten “Unterm Himmelszelt”, which was built in 1973, is located between the Bierbaum Community Primary School and the Apostle Church.

Location and settlement structure

The Bierbaum settlement is located on the regularly oval crest of the Brutenberg, which further down on three sides drops steeply to the upper Elspetal and the Räther-Siepen . Only to the Herscheider Landstrasse, which runs here on a saddle, does the summit run out relatively flat; here is also the road access to the settlement. This not only has the structure of a garden city because of its location, which was originally isolated from the core city , the internal urban structure also corresponds to this. A central area in the shape of a hill on the hilltop is occupied by the public buildings and surrounded by a ring of two-story apartment buildings. Further to the outside there are further ring-shaped streets with residential and single-family houses on large garden plots. Apart from the access area from the Herscheider Landstrasse, there is a forest belt on all sides on the lower mountain slopes. In the surrounding landscape, often only the tower of the Apostle Church can be seen as an attractive landmark .
