Bisacquino is an Italian city in the metropolitan city of Palermo in the autonomous region of Sicily with 4321 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location and dates

Bisacquino is 80 km south of Palermo . The residents mainly work in agriculture. The main products are cattle breeding, grain, olive oil and, to a lesser extent, wine, almonds and nuts. Other important economic factors are the afforestation of Monte Triona and the maintenance of the extensive forest area.

The neighboring communities are Caltabellotta ( AG ), Campofiorito , Chiusa Sclafani , Contessa Entellina , Corleone , Giuliana , Monreale , Roccamena and Sambuca di Sicilia ( AG ).

history

The community goes back to Arab origins, an Arab hamlet once stood here. From 1183 to 1778 the bishops from Monreale ruled in Bisacquino.

Attractions

The three-aisled parish church with dome La Matrice was built in 1713. The pilgrimage church of Madonna del Balzo is located on Monte Triona at an altitude of 950 meters. The city museum in the former monastery Chiesa dei Cappuccini is worth seeing. In the vicinity of the village are the ruins of the abbey of Santa Maria del Bosco di Calatamauro, as well as the remains of the early fortified Arab settlement Castello Batellaro. In the village you can also find the restored Mulino Vaccarizzotto mill, which is typical of the area.
