history

Aglasterhausen

Aglasterhausen town hall with local well

The place name comes from the Old High German agilalstra (Elster). Via agilaster, Aggleisterhusen (1265), Agilsterhusen (1278), Agileisterwiler, Alsterhausen, Agelesterhausen (1406), the place name finally changed to today's Aglasterhausen. During the time of the tribal duchies, the place was in the Duchy of Franconia .

Aglasterhausen was first mentioned in a document in 1137 in purchase negotiations in connection with the Lords of Kirchheim. The patronage right lay with the von Horneck gentlemen . The brothers Werner and Konrad von Horneck donated these rights together with those from Helmstadt to the Wimpfen monastery in a document dated May 27, 1254 .

Around 1255 a "Who ..." (Werner?) Von Agilasterhusen appears together with an Arnold and Sweneger as a signatory of a document. Presumably at that time there was also a small fortified castle on the Gewann Schlossbuckel, the Aglasterhausen Castle . The system was discovered in 1959 during road construction work. As the owner of the castle, a nobleman from Aglaisterhausen first appears, then a Swicker from Helmstatt , who sold it in 1421, including fields and meadows, to the Lords of Hirschhorn , who had already bought part of the local fief from Diether von Massenbach in 1358 . As village bailiffs, the knights of Hirschhorn administered the episcopal estates in the village. The tithe flowed to the Wimpfen pen in the valley. According to an old description, the office of the bailiffs was on the churchyard wall (probably the Höfer house). Johann von Hirschhorn pledged the place to the Electoral Palatinate in 1416 .

After the Hirschhorn died out in 1632, the Lords of Ehrenberg received the fiefdom. After their extinction, Count Johann Anton Cratz von Scharfenstein , nephew of Bishop Eberhard Cratz von Scharfenstein , received the fief. However, with the preference for his own family, the bishop drew the anger of the Electoral Palatinate. Between 1678 and 1680, these sent their counts to village-like-vogue court meetings and caused plenty of conflicts. After the Scharfenstein counts died out in 1718, the diocese of Worms had the town administered by the bailiff Mr. Valois, based at Ehrenberg Castle . He probably had a lot to do to defend the rights of the bishop against the Palatinate.

In 1803, Aglasterhausen fell to the Grand Duchy of Baden as part of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss . In 1862 Aglasterhausen was connected to the Badische Odenwaldbahn ; as a result, the place is said to have seemed deserted. Bakeries, restaurants and blacksmiths had to close, also due to a bad harvest in the same year. The Aglasterhausen station has been the end of this line since 1971. In 1939 there were 1087 inhabitants, at the end of 1945 there were 1338.

Aglasterhausen coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver (white) on a green shield base between two green poplars with a black trunk, a red house with a black magpie on the roof."
Crest Reason: The Wappenbild encountered in similar form in court seal from the second half of the 18th century and is talking to the place name as Elster Hausen is interpreted (from Old High German agile astra = magpie, crow). The red tiled roof between two poplars is supposed to indicate clay deposits on damp ground.

Culture and sights

In the center of Aglasterhausen there is the town hall and the Protestant church with a striking double nave from 1806/07. There is an old oak fountain and a new sandstone fountain on the village square. The rectory is a baroque building from the 18th century. The main road and the country road were rebuilt around 1780 by Elector Carl Theodor . A memorial stone of the Stüber Cent from 1782, renovated in 2006, commemorates him. Along the main road there are various historical properties from the time the road was built, including the historic Drei Könige inn from 1780. Various other historical properties, some with ornamental frameworks (e.g. house Mosbacher Straße 3 ), have been preserved in the village . The Catholic Church dates from 1964. There has been a castle in the village since the high Middle Ages , which was inhabited by the Lords of Helmstatt from 1387 to 1421. The castle ruins were demolished during the construction of federal highway 292 . Furthermore, wall and road remains from Roman times have been found.

In Breitenbronn , the town hall and the church from 1840 can be seen in the center of the village . There are also historical fountains and several properties, some of which date back to the 18th century.

In Daudenzell there is a Protestant church with an extraordinary altar and wall paintings from the 13th century in the tower. The Protestant parsonage right next to the church was built in 1735. The town hall has a large-format facade painting with scenes from local history. In addition, the considerable number of comparatively large historical rural properties is remarkable.

In Michelbach are also located Town Hall , church and village wells and historic half-timbered building.
