Buchanan engine
The NH Buchanan Motor Co. Pty. Ltd. was an Australian manufacturer of kit cars from Lidcombe in New South Wales . Sports car production ran from 1956 to 1961.
Models
The first bodywork Buchanan made was based on the Aston Martin DB3 S racing car . Buchanan borrowed a DB3S from the UK and took molds when the car was in Australia. The design was slightly changed by leaving out the intake grilles in the bonnet and using a different grille, now in an oval shape. Because Buchanan was targeting customers who wanted their early MG with a new body, the bodies were lengthened a few inches between the door cutouts and the front fenders.
Kit-car racing cars were also offered. They consisted of the bodies described above and a welded X-frame racing chassis made of rectangular tubing. The mechanics came from FJ Holden , with the front and rear axles being adapted to the smaller vehicle width.
In 1958 the Buchanan Cobra was introduced. These vehicles were based on the Ten standard . However, only seven pieces were made.
Location of the vehicles
The Cobra No. 1 (see photo) was parked in a hall in Warners Bay (New South Wales) in November 2006 and is to be restored.
The Cobra No. 3 is in drivable condition and has been regularly used in races in Victoria (Australia) since May 2007.
The Buchanan based on a MG Y with Holden engine that belonged to Wally Mitchell was completely restored by its current owners Matthew Liersch and Clark Watson until April 2009 .
