Southern Cross Car Australian

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Southern Cross Car Australian was an automobile company founded by the Australian aviation pioneer Charles Kingsford Smith as chairman, director and also developer of this company. Kingsford Smith was the first pilot to cross the Pacific Ocean from the United States to Australia in 1928, setting further flight records.

Production took place from June 1933 at Marks Motor Construction Ltd in Burwood , New South Wales . There are no more copies of these vehicles today. Sources report that only four, six and ten vehicles were produced.

The automobiles were powered by an air-cooled four - cylinder boxer engine with an output of 41 kW . The vehicles had a four-speed gearshift. The chassis consisted of laminated wood, from which the construction of flying machines at that time was made. It is reported that a fire destroyed the last vehicle in the early 1970s. Even back then, it was considered a fire hazard vehicle due to its wooden chassis.

A source reports that Kingford Smith had four vehicles built in June 1933 before getting lost on a record attempt to fly with his co-pilot over the Andaman Sea . Two of these automobiles had four doors each and two convertibles had two doors each. The automobile production was given up after the death of Kingsford Smith in a crash on the occasion of a night flight on November 8, 1935 in the Andaman Sea.
