The Campus Symposium is an international business conference that has been taking place on the site of the former Bernhard Hülsmann barracks in Iserlohn since 2005 and is organized by students from the region. Until 2014, the two-day event took place on the premises of the Business and Information Technology School (Bits) in Iserlohn.

The Campus Symposium is organized by students from the region and takes place every two years in September. The organization team consists of students from different regional institutions. In 2016, this included the ISM - International School of Management (Dortmund) as an official university partner, the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences (Iserlohn), the BiTS - Business and Information Technology School (Iserlohn) and the FernUniversität (Hagen). The ISM - International School of Management (Dortmund) has been the official university partner since 2018 .

The event took place annually until 2010, after which the organizers changed over to a two-year cycle. The program of the business conference extends over two days and ranges from lectures, workshops and panel discussions to an extensive supporting program including a gala evening.

The focus of the Campus Symposium is the goal of generating knowledge and creating a networking platform where renowned speakers and entrepreneurs come together. In this way, the student team helps to make the business location South Westphalia with its numerous hidden champions and world market leaders even better known and to bring together entrepreneurs across all industries.

The Campus Symposium is financed on the one hand from sponsorship funds and on the other hand from the sale of admission tickets and is therefore not open to the public. Around 800 guests follow the presentations in the tent city on each day of the event.

history

The first Campus Symposium took place on May 29th and 30th, 2005 in front of a few hundred guests in the auditorium of the university under the motto “Exchange knowledge - create innovations”. The main speaker was the former Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker , who spoke about the challenges and opportunities for Germany in a united Europe. The symposium was organized by the Institute for Event Management, which had recently been founded as an affiliated institute at BiTS. Other speakers were the former chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group Friedrich Merz and Felix Tenkmann from the NRW.Bank . Workshops under the direction of BiTS lecturers and a panel discussion completed the program.

Due to the positive response from last year, the Campus Symposium 2006 took place on a larger scale for the first time. Due to increasing demand, the symposium moved from the BiTS auditorium to a 4000 m² tent city on the university's car park. The theme was "Future Needs Competence" and later became the motto of the Campus Symposium. The organization team won the former US President Bill Clinton as the main speaker , which made the symposium headlines across Germany. In addition, the then NATO Commander-in-Chief for Europe, General James L. Jones , the then CEO of O₂ Germany , Rudolf Gröger, the last Governor of Hong Kong and then Chancellor of the University of Oxford , Chris Patten , and Audi Board Member Ralph Weyler, spoke .

In 2007 the economic conference looked into the question of which factors are decisive for “corporate success in the 21st century”. Among other things, the former UN Secretary General and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Kofi Annan spoke on the subject of "Political Leadership". In addition, the speakers included the CEO of BP Germany , Uwe Franke , Mercedes boss Jürgen Hubbert , the managing director of the WAZ media group , Bodo Hombach , entrepreneur and lawyer Helmut Rödl , the CEO of KarstadtQuelle Insurance , Peter M. Endres , and the later CEO of Deutsche Bank , Jürgen Fitschen .

In 2008, the focus was on innovative entrepreneurship and the slogan was “Innovations as a future concept”. Over 1,000 guests, 250 volunteers and around 150 journalists took part in the tent city on campus. For the first time, three key speakers designed the two-day program: Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder , the former Prime Minister of Bavaria Edmund Stoiber and the former Polish President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Lech Wałęsa . Other speakers included Margret Suckale , who was then Chief Human Resources Officer at Deutsche Bahn , and other board members of German companies. In 2008 the symposium was moderated by students for the first time in order to underline the character of the event, which was organized entirely by students.

The focus of the Campus Symposium 2009 was the future-oriented combination of economic and ecological action. Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was the keynote speaker . In addition to him, the CEO of RWE Innogy , Fritz Vahrenholt , environmental researcher Ernst Ulrich von Weizsäcker , Federal Environment Minister Sigmar Gabriel , the managing director of IBM Germany , Martin Jetter , astronaut Ulrich Walter , qualified meteorologist Sven Plöger and the CEO of T-Systems , Reinhard Clemens .

Panel discussion 2010

The title of the event "Sustainability - Social Reality or Green Fiction?" Was based one year later (2010) on the topic of 2009, but at the same time continued to develop under the aspects of economically sustainable action and social responsibility. The main speech was given by former US Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize winner Al Gore . After a one-year break, the seventh Campus Symposium took place on September 13 and 14, 2012, this time under the motto “Communication - The Key to Success”. For the first time, both key speakers, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice , appeared together. Other speakers included singer and songwriter Peter Maffay , the former head of the Vatican City Governorate, Giovanni Cardinal Lajolo , Bundeswehr General Carsten Jacobson , futurologist Pero Mićić and advertising specialist Frank Dopheide .

In 2014 the student organization team decided on the topic "Change - fear of the future or new perspective ?!" decided. On the sub-topics of megatrends, political framework conditions, corporate culture , international relations and society's culture, u. a. Bob Geldof , Dr. Mohamed El Baradei , former Federal President D. Dr. Roman Herzog , Anja Förster , Franz Müntefering and Jewgenij Schmagin . In the panel discussions on the energy transition, corporate culture, Europe and football, Bärbel Höhn , Barbara Steffens , Armin Laschet , Alojz Peterle , Marina Weisband , Toni Schumacher and Reiner Calmund discussed .

In 2016, the Campus Symposium took place on the new site for the first time. Since then, the venue has been the site of the former Bernhard Hülsmann barracks in Iserlohn. On September 8th and 9th, 2016 the Campus Symposium took place under the topic "Values ​​- System and social market economy in transition?" held for the 9th time. In 2018 the motto of the Campus Symposium was "Digitize or die?! - Challenges for politics, business and society". Important personalities and very interesting guests such as the Minister of State for Digitization Dorothee Bär , the former President of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso and the Minister for Economy, Innovation, Digitization and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia Andreas Pinkwart came to the tent city to talk about the changes To give lectures on digitization in politics, business and society. The focus was on the effects on the medium-sized economy, as well as the effects of digitization on our living and working world. Charlie Award

As part of the Campus Symposium 2012, a student jury honored role models for the young generation with the Charlie Award for the first time . This special award honors role models of the young generation. Under the motto "a cloth full of knowledge", personalities and projects are honored who achieve good, pursue their goals despite all contradictions and represent their values.

The first winners in 2012 were Niki Lauda in the sports category, Eva Luise Köhler in the society category and Borussia Dortmund , represented by team captain Sebastian Kehl , in the company category. The former Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia Jürgen Rüttgers received the special award for his commitment to German-Israeli friendship.

In 2013 the Charlie Award was presented outside of the two-year cycle of the Campus Symposium. This year Uwe Seeler received the award for his strength of character and his social commitment, Leslie Mandoki for his courage to live, the former Israeli ambassador Avi Primor received the Charlie Award for his support for German-Israeli friendship and Julia Neigel received the award for her fight against Racism. Her Imperial Majesty Farah Pahlavi , who was unable to accept the award at the actual award ceremony for health reasons, received the Charlie Award retrospectively in March 2014 for her extraordinary dedication to her home country and her commitment, especially to children and young people, by the student jury.

In 2014 the Charlie Award took place again as part of the Campus Symposium in the tent city on the Seilersee. Award winner Nazan Eckes received the award in the social engagement and media category. The Paralympics winner Anna Schaffelhuber received the prize in the sport category, the director Sönke Wortmann in the film and media category and Gudrun Bauer in the social commitment category. Prioress Sister Dr. Raphaela dealer OSB received the Charlie Award for her life's work. For the first time in 2014, readers of the Westfalenpost were able to vote online for their favorites in the Initiative in South Westphalia category. The winner was the Building One World association from Hallenberg. The two second places went to the lay resuscitation project and the working group "Es TUT sich WAS".

In 2016, as part of the Campus Symposium, Neven Subotic was recognized for his commitment to the Neven Subotic Foundation, Marc Peine and Christian Vosseler for their work in Kinderlachen eV and composer and musician Detlev Jöcker . Also this year regional projects were suggested by readers of the Westfalenpost . Lutz Malaschöwski, the Bottle Children eV and the Afghan Children's Aid in Germany eV were honored with the Charlie Award as heroes from the region.

In 2018 the Charlie Award was given to Coding Kids in the "Digitization" category and to Terre des hommes in the "Supraregional" category. Coding Kids is a magazine that aims to enable children to learn about new technology. Terre de Hommes is a children's charity that is involved in child and development cooperation.

Students from all over Germany can apply for the student jury. It has been reassembled every two years since 2014.

Awards

The organizers of the Campus Symposium won the Knowledge Prize of the Marketing Club Südwestfalen in 2009 for the efficient transfer of knowledge about the event.

At the beginning of 2011, the Campus Symposium won the special INA (International Young Talent Event Award), which is awarded for special projects.

Claudia Wendel, BiTS alumni and project manager of the Campus Symposium 2010, was named Event Manager of the Year 2011 by the Blach Report for her work.
