Christopher is a short form of Christopherus and a German variant of the originally ancient Greek first name Christophorus with the literal meaning "Christ bearer". It originated in the German-speaking area in the 10th century and also became popular in the English-speaking area, where it has developed into the most popular variant of the name. Another abbreviation of the name resulted in the now much more common first name Christoph in German-speaking countries .
