Colleen "Coco" Vandeweghe (born  December 6, 1991 in New York ) is an American tennis player .

Career

Vandeweghe, who prefers hard courts according to the ITF profile, started playing tennis at the age of eleven.

On September 7, 2008, she won the US Open junior title ; she started with a wildcard and defeated Gabriela Paz from Venezuela 7: 6 3 , 6: 1 in the final . At the side of Tetjana Luschanska from Ukraine, she won her first double title on the ITF Women's Circuit in 2010 . In total, she won six doubles and two singles titles at ITF tournaments.

In her sixth participation in a Grand Slam tournament , she had survived the opening round at the US Open for the first time in 2011 , before losing to Samantha Stosur 3: 6, 4: 6. Her first major success was on July 15, 2012 when she reached the final of the Stanford WTA tournament , which she lost to Serena Williams 5-7 and 3-6. In 2013 she qualified again in the second round of the US Open , this time she lost to Carla Suárez Navarro 3: 6 and 4: 6.

In June 2014 she finally secured her first title on the WTA Tour . With a smooth final victory over Zheng Jie at the lawn tournament in 's-Hertogenbosch , she improved to position 51 in the WTA world rankings ; in February 2015 she was number 32 in the world. In Wimbledon , after victories over Anna Karolína Schmiedlová , Karolína Plíšková and Samantha Stosur, she defeated the French Open finalist Lucie Šafářová in two close sets in the tie-break, making her the first time in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam tournament. There she had to admit defeat to Maria Sharapova in three sentences. At the side of Anna-Lena Grönefeld , she also reached the second round in doubles at Wimbledon. In Flushing Meadows they were in the semifinals , in which they lost in three sets against the Kazakh-Australian pair Schwedowa / Dellacqua . Vandeweghe thus improved to 55th place in the double ranking, and in May 2016 she was listed at 19th place.

At the Australian Open she reached the semifinals in 2017 with victories against, among others, the world number one Angelique Kerber and the 7th Garbiñe Muguruza , in which Venus Williams proved to be the stronger after two tight sets. With 9th place in the individual world rankings, Vandeweghe achieved her best rating to date in January 2018.

After the US Open 2018 , where she only reached the first round in singles, Vandeweghe began a ten-month injury break, so that she slipped to position 467 in the WTA world rankings in women's singles by August 2019 . In doubles, thanks to her final victory at the 2018 US Open , she stayed in 24th place on the list together with Ashleigh Barty . At the Silicon Valley Classic in San Jose at the end of July 2019 (after receiving a wild card for this tournament), she lost her opening match against Aryna Sabalenka 3-6, 3-6 .

Her mother Tauna Vandeweghe took part in the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal in swimming. Coco was named after her grandmother Colleen Kay Hutchins, Miss America from 1952.
