The river Sesia gives it its name ; The appellation name translates as "banks of the Sesia".

Cultivation

The wine-growing areas in the Sesia area (Northern Piedmont)

The production area is part of a historically important wine-growing region, which is located at the last foothills of the Alps on both sides of the Sesia River in the provinces of Vercelli , Biella and Novara . There are nine DOP wine zones, represented by the “Consorzio Tutela Nebbioli - Alto Piemonte” consortium: Gattinara DOCG , Ghemme DOCG , Boca DOC , Bramaterra DOC , Colline Novaresi DOC , Coste della Sesia, Fara DOC , Lessona DOC , Sizzano DOC . The production area for the Coste della Sesia DOC is located west of the Sesia river on the territory of the municipalities: Gattinara , Roasio , Lozzolo , Serravalle Sesia (all in the province of Vercelli); Lessona , Masserano , Brusnengo , Curino , Villa del Bosco , Sostegno , Cossato , Mottalciata , Candelo , Quaregna , Cerreto Castello , Valdengo and Vigliano Biellese (all in the province of Biella).

The DOC Coste della Sesia is an appellation founded relatively late (1996) whose historical core is the DOCG Gattinara - which was created as DOC Gattinara in 1967. Furthermore, the DOC Coste della Sesia includes the areas of the traditional cultivation zones Lessona and Bramaterra. Thus, this represents a superordinate appellation that makes it possible to buy a wine that was produced on the soil of one of these three historical areas, but the comparatively stricter production rules (e.g. with regard to maximum hectare yield, alcohol content, percentage of the grape varieties to be used) has not been met, or has been pressed from grapes that come from vineyards outside of these cultivation zones, should also be put on the market as a wine of origin.

As a counterpart to the DOC Coste della Sesia there is the DOC Colline Novaresi, founded in 1994, on the eastern Sesia side .

The range includes the wines: "Coste della Sesia" Rosso, "Coste della Sesia" Rosato, "Coste della Sesia" Bianco, "Coste della Sesia" Nebbiolo, "Coste della Sesia" Croatina and "Coste della Sesia" Vespolina.
