The Demokraatit ( Greenlandic for "Democrats") are a political party in Greenland .
history
It was founded on November 28, 2002 around the politician Per Berthelsen , who had been expelled from the social democratic Siumut the year before . Only a few days later, the party immediately received the third most votes of all parties. In 2005 the party became the second largest force in the country. In 2008, Per Berthelsen fell out with his party. He was voted out of office as party leader and left the party. Under his successor Jens B. Frederiksen , the party suffered heavy losses in 2009, with the number of votes almost halved. As a result, however, the Democrats became members of a coalition government for the first time. In 2013 the share of the vote was halved again. The following year Frederiksen left the party and Anda Uldum was appointed as his successor. Under him, the party almost returned to the 2009 election results in the same year. She then joined a Siumut-led coalition. The government collapsed in 2016 and the Democrats went into opposition. In 2018, they received the second-best result in party history with their candidate Niels Thomsen . From October 2018 to May 2020, the party tolerated the minority government before forming a coalition with it.
Political orientation
The Demokraatit see themselves as a social liberal party which, like the Atassut, is committed to maintaining the Rigsfællesskabet . The Democraatit was the only party in Greenland to reject the Selvstyre, which was introduced in 2009. The party is particularly popular with the Danish population in Greenland. Her goals are to lower the corporate tax, improve the level of education and the economic system in Greenland and solve the country's social problems.
