EHF Champions League 1998/99

In the EHF Champions League 1998/99 33 handball club teams took part, which had qualified for the competition in their home leagues in the previous season. It was the 39th edition of the EHF Champions League or the European Cup of National Champions. The defending champion was FC Barcelona . The cup games began on September 6, 1998, the second final took place on April 17, 1999. In the final, FC Barcelona prevailed again, again against Badel 1862 Zagreb .

mode

At the beginning there was an elimination round, played in a knockout system with a return leg. The winner moved into the round of 32, which was also played in a knockout system with a return leg. The winners reached the group stage known as the “ Champions League ”. In the group stage with four groups of four teams each, each group played a game against each other. The two best groups in each group reached the quarter-finals. From the quarter-finals onwards, the knockout system was played back and forth. The winner of the final was the EHF Champions League winner of the 1998/99 season.

Elimination round

The first leg took place on September 6, 1998 in Travnik and the second leg on September 4 in Tbilisi .

The first legs took place on 3rd / 4th. October 1998 and the second leg on 10./11. October 1998, with the following exceptions:

  • Red Boys Differdange versus Viking Stavanger, return leg on 10/11. October 1998 in Stavanger
  • RK Celje against E&O Emmen, first and second leg on 3rd / 4th October 1998 in Celje

The first leg in Zagreb took place on April 10, 1999 and the second leg in Barcelona on April 17, 1999. For the third time in a row these teams faced each other in the final and for the third time FC Barcelona won.
