Geographical location
Edinburgh is in the south of Penobscot County. The eastern boundary of the area of the town forms the Penobscot River . Other smaller rivers cross the area with a southerly direction of flow. They all flow into the Penobscot River. There are no lakes in the area. The surface is flat, without any significant elevations.

history
Settlement of the area began in 1827. On January 31, 1835, Edinburgh was organized as an independent town. Previously, the Township No. 1 Old Indian Purchase, West of Penobscot River (T1 OIP WPR) . Further designations were in a drawing: Township No. 1, First Range (Township No. 1, Second Range, being now part of Lagrange ).

Edinburgh is on Interstate 95 , which runs through the southeast corner of the town. The Maine State Route 116 is parallel in a north-south direction to the Penobscot River along the eastern border of the Town.
