Location of the municipality | ||
Ferrol is a port city in northwestern Spain . The city is located in the province of A Coruña , in the autonomous region (Comunidad Autónoma) of Galicia on the Atlantic Ocean .
Ferrol is the birthplace of the Spanish dictator Francisco Franco , who - among others - bore the title El Caudillo (" Leader "). Based on this, Ferrol was named El Ferrol del Caudillo from 1938 to 1982 .
history
El Ferrol has been one of the most important Spanish war ports and naval bases for centuries. Immediately at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War , the coup military took three days to gain control of Ferrol. Republicans, along with sailors, tried desperately to crush the coup. Rear Admiral Antonio Arazola , who refused to support the coup, was killed in the Dolores barracks on August 4, 1936 on the orders of Vice Admirals Indalecio Nuñez and Salvador Moreno .
population
The population of Ferrol has fallen from 87,700 in 1981 to 66,065 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019, Instituto Nacional de Estadística ). This population decrease is directly related to the rapid growth of Narón , which borders the city and is part of the Ferrol district (also known as Ferrolterra).

Every year, during Easter week or Semana Santa, the typical Spanish processions take place in Ferrol , which are similar to Semana Santa in Seville . They are the largest and most important in northern Spain and are therefore classified as “of national tourist interest”. Semana Santa is the city's most important festival throughout the year and is attended by many tourists.
Since 2007 the city has been on the tentative list of Spain for inclusion in the world cultural heritage . Central points of the application are the old arsenal of the local shipyard, the fortresses of San Felipe and La Palma , which are located a little outside the city, and other military buildings.
Ferrol is also the official starting point of the Camiño Ingles (English Way of St. James)
