Erich Aries

Erich Widder (born October 24, 1925 in Wels ; † May 30, 2000 in Linz ) was an Austrian theologian , Germanist and art historian .

For many years he was the diocesan curator and head of the picture office of the Diocese of Linz and published numerous art history books and magazine articles.

Live and act

Erich Widder was the son of the Federal Railroad employee Franz Widder and his wife Maria. At a young age he developed an interest in traditional and contemporary art and documented numerous works of art in the context of photo campaigns in the Wels district and the city of Wels as well as in the context of his work with the Catholic youth .

During the war he worked on art documentaries in the Kremsmünster and Lambach monasteries that were closed by the National Socialist government .

Widder studied at the Universities of Innsbruck and Friborg and graduated with a doctorate in philosophy . In 1954 he married Gertrude, with whom he had three sons.

From 1955 until his retirement he was in the service of the Diocese of Linz, headed the Diocesan Image Office and was in charge of the Art Department of the Diocese of Linz . In 1961 he was appointed diocesan curator by the bishop .

Widder established the Diocesan Image Center as a current documentation center for traditional and contemporary church art in Europe and initiated the complete inventory of the diocese's art holdings. From 1957 he was a member of the diocesan council and from 1970 he was its deputy chairman.

In his function as diocesan curator, he published books, church guides, book chapters and magazine articles, designed radio programs about Christian art and helped set up exhibitions at the diocesan and state level.

As chairman of the diocesan art association, he was the editor and photographer of the association's information and later co-editor of the ecumenical journal for architecture and art, art and church . He was known nationwide as an expert in connection with ecclesiastical art and monument preservation and was involved in the restoration and expansion of the holdings of the Diocesan Museum including adequate accommodation.

The liturgical reorganization of the church rooms after the Second Vatican Council was one of his special tasks. He imparted his knowledge as a lecturer and as a leader of art trips to almost all European countries.
