Foxes is a song by German hip-hop - music group Absolute Beginner , in collaboration with the German rapper Samy Deluxe emerged. The piece is the fourth single from their second studio album Bambule .

Creation and artwork

Füchse was written by the absolute beginner members Jan Eißfeldt ( Jan Delay ), Dennis Lisk (Denyo) and Guido Weiss (DJ Mad), the guest interpreter Samy Deluxe (Samy Sorge) and the former band member Martin Wilkes (Platin Martin). Mixing, recording and production were also carried out by all Absolute Beginner members in the Turtle Bay Studios, with the support of the Bremen producer Matthias Arfmann . The mastering took place under the direction of Bernd Steinwedel in Studio Nord Bremen . The instrumentation was done by DJ Mad, who was responsible for the mixer.

On the front cover of the single - in addition to the artist name and band logo - there are white illustrations on a black background. The artwork comes from the Hamburg graphic agency Typeholics.

Publication and promotion

Foxes first appeared as part of Bambule on November 10, 1998, the second studio album from Absolute Beginners. On August 13, 1999 the piece was released as a promo single on vinyl in two different variations . One week later, on August 20, 1999, it was officially released as a maxi single on CD by the music labels Buback and Motor Music . The regular maxi single consisted of six tracks, which were composed of different versions of the song. In addition to the album and radio version, it included an instrumental version and three remix versions of Foxes . The remix versions come from the band member Denyo as “Dennis Germany”, Martin Wilkes and Boris Ekambi together with Tropf . In addition to the regular single release, a limited maxi single was released at the same time, which was expanded to include the B-side K Zwo (also known as K2 ). In addition, a 2-track promo single was released, which only contained the A-side Füchse and the B-side K2 . On June 12, 2000, an official remix version of Milan East appeared on the remix album Bambule: Boombule - The Remixed Album , in which Patrice is also a guest musician. The song was published by Ja / Nein Musikverlag and Sempex Musikverlag.

- Refrain, original excerpt

The lyrics to Foxes are written in German . The text was written by Jan Delay, Samy Deluxe, Denyo and Martin Wilkes. The composition was composed by Delay, Denyo, DJ Mad and Wilkes. The composition itself is based on a sample from The Originals ’s You're My Only World . Lyrically, Füchse uses elements from Sky's the Limit by The Notorious BIG feat. 112 on. Musically, the song moves in the realm of German hip-hop . The tempo is 85 beats per minute . The key is F sharp major .

The song is made up of five stanzas, a chorus and an outro . The song starts with the first verse that Samy Deluxe raps. The first verse is followed by the second, which is rapped by Jan Delay. After the second verse, the first chorus follows, which is interpreted by the two absolute beginner members Delay and Denyo. The chorus is followed by the third verse, whose rap is from Denyo. After the third stanza, the refrain follows again, followed by the fourth and fifth stanzas of Delay and Deluxe respectively. The fifth verse is followed by the refrain one last time before the piece ends with the outro. The outro is a telephone-speaking sequence between Delay and a person (in the music video a hunter), in which Delay is told that foxes are not pack animals .

The fact that the Absolute Beginners dedicated a song to the fox came from an idea by Jan Delay. It came up with this because the fox is a "cool" animal. You would also need a coat of arms as a logo so that the whole thing would have a face. He said to his band mates that the fox was “small” and “cute”, but also “loud” and above all “smart”. Those were all attributes that hit the band at that time.

On an allusion from the online format Bento that Delay stuck to the topic the most, while Denyo and Samy Deluxe only touched on the main topic, Delay replied the following: “That's how it is in German rap. But that wasn't a problem either. ”Delay is of the opinion that his bandmate Denyo has already stuck to the topic. Deluxe had "delivered such a great verse" that it didn't matter whether he stuck to it. He thinks that this looseness, since approaching this record like that, was also very good in retrospect. Nowadays he would at least incorporate a few animal metaphors , which would make the production process longer and more cramped again. A lot of other things would then also be omitted. In this respect, he is of the opinion that it actually went well. It is questionable whether the piece would be where it is today if everyone had "wrapped around the ears for a couple of nights, gone home, and rewrote everything." That's why it's cool the way it is. "

When asked whether the chorus line "Because the pack romps when the ruble rolls" was a rhyme of purpose, Delay still described the line as "a great rhyme". At that time, double or multiple rhymes were not used as inflationarily as they are today.

The telephone-speaking sequence at the end of the song came about in such a way that the producer Matthias Arfmann looked up a lexicon at the time and said: “Foxes are not pack animals at all”. Delay replied, "OK, wait, I have to record the last chorus". After that, Delay asked Arfmann to let the piece go on at the end and here Delay snapped in the chorus in an “onetake” and at the end made this “ freestyle-like ” telephone-speaking sequence, where “this clever guy ” calls and says that Foxes are not pack animals. The tuner of the "Clever" is an imitation of Arfmann's mother.

aftermath

The title found its tribute in various rap songs over the course of its years , as a so-called sample . A popular line that is picked up by other rappers is the beginning of the second stanza: “Ouch, the stomach growls like hell. I'm getting out of my den. Lock the door, go through the precinct. Mark here and there that I was there ”. Karuzo from Genetikk and Marsimoto picked up the line :

“Howgh, the stomach growls like hell. Here you hunt yourself and don't send your wife. "

- Marsimoto in "Indians"

“Eyau, the stomach growls like hell. I smoke and I'm already building the next one. Lock the door, go through the precinct. Mark here and there that I was there. "

- Genetics in "DNA"

Another quote that has been sampled many times is the line: “A fox has to do what a fox has to do. Luxury and fame and rule to the end ”, from the fourth verse of the song. This line is taken up by Ahzumjot , Samy Deluxe, Die Säcke, Marsimoto again, OK Kid , among others :

“A good person has to do what a good person has to do. Luxury and fame, sucking around until the end. "

- OK Kid in "Good People"

"Tell me what's the problem? What use is luxury? Ey, a fox has to do what a fox has to do. "

- Ahzumjot in "Prio"

“A joint has to do what a joint has to do. Never stop glowing, just burn until the end. "

- Marsimoto in "Green Bill"

"Take your ex to the room, bring her naked to the bus. A sack has to do what a sack has to do. "

- The bags in "International Sensation"

“A man has to do what a man has to do. Luxury and fame and rule to the end. "

- Samy Deluxe in "Man Must Do"

“One hand on the mic, the other turns the mix. 'One hand on the steering wheel, the other hand on the seat ... Yes, luxury is what lures me to the purple river. But fox has to do what a fox has to do, brother. "

- Raf Camora in "Indipendenza"

Music video

The music video for Foxes begins with a man with a chainsaw standing in a cornfield . This can be seen briefly in the entire video every now and then. The next scene shows the inside of a hunting lodge with trophies shot on the wall, but these are not the usual hunting trophies, but a microphone, a shoe, a human hand or human heads. Furthermore, a cap for the absolute beginner hangs on the wall as an achievement. In the following scenes, two hunters can be seen on a tour through their territory, as well as the performers rapping the song at different locations near the hunters, such as a cornfield, next to the hunting lodge or in a treetop. In one scene, everyone involved in rap is sitting at the foot of a tree while one of the hunters aims his weapon at Denyo and shoots a beverage can out of his hand. Towards the end of the video, Delay, Denyo and Samy enter the hunting lodge and are shocked by the achievements hanging there. The three of them flee from the hut shortly before the hunters arrive. In the final scene, Delay receives a call from one of the hunters over a phone tied to a tree. Here the hunter explains that foxes are not pack animals and hangs up again. When he hung up the phone, the man saws with the chainsaw right next to the hunter, from outside, into the wall, which ends the video. The total length of the video is 4:44 minutes. The video was made under the direction of Svenja Rossa. To date, the music video has over nine million views on YouTube (as of July 2020).

Reviews

Clark Senger from HipHop.de described foxes as “one of the greatest songs in German rap history”.

The German-language online magazine laut.de rated the album Bambule with five out of five stars and described it as a “milestone in music history”. During a review by Stefan Johannesberg, he came to the conclusion that the line rapped by Denyo: “Many just mess up. I don't care, if all else fails, I'll be rid of the gallows. We style big! "Is the" best rhyme "of the album and can be seen as the" motto of the album ".

Dennis Sand from welt.de is of the opinion that Samy Deluxe already combines “complex rhyme structures with demanding flow patterns” in his rap part, while he allegedly described cult lines like “Ouch, my stomach growls like pig” as “shit”.

In its “Deutschrap 25: The History of German Hip-Hop” section, Red Bull looked back at the history of German hip-hop and dedicated itself to the most important titles of each year. As a representative for the year 1998, they chose foxes that they described, among other things, as a "massive announcement". Claus Schwartau described foxes as one of the first songs that could finally free German rap from being stupid. But the piece is also “unconscious and danceable” without sounding like Nordic by Nature and Die da . Singles from similar formations, who came up under the same sign at that time, could have done something, but Füchse was the only title that could do everything. At that time, Schwartau and those around him did not have much confidence in Deutschrap; there would not have been much to celebrate on a large scale and outside of the niche. The Fantastischen Vier were already 20 years older. ANNA from Freundeskreis had been better, but Max Herre standing in the rain was still not a Method Man . To Fischmob they had just drunk. At Fettes Brot and Fünf Sterne deluxe, chanting still seemed like a tool to pack as much pun, nonsense and Hamburg stuff as possible in four minutes. But then Füchse came and turned everything inside out in the first 35 seconds. At first there was nothing more than a dramatic hammering piano and a foreword by Samy Deluxe, which completely gave a shit about whether "Aunt Hildegard" would understand exactly what the "young man" was talking about. “Wickeda-MC, with pure flows of nature like Sensi”, that was suddenly no longer a mere “rap gag”, no “ Low German disco”, no “youthful Jan Fedder droning” on beats. Schwartau and those around him found this to be competitive hip-hop. However, it was really “phenomenal” that after Delays “Ouch, the stomach growls like hell” everyone danced. It would work as both, just like in the USA: "Edge, coolness and party". That would never have happened before. Mainly for this reason, Füchse is still one of the “best German rap songs of all time” for Schwartau. The Absolute Beginner would have provided the blueprint, which was continued in the 2000s by Aggro Berlin , KIZ , Marteria , Haftbefehl and the 187 street gang in their own colors. Almost 20 years after its publication, Füchse has lost none of its influence on the genre.
