The 1962 Automobile World Championship was the 13th season of the Automobile World Championship, which is now known as the Formula 1 World Championship . The drivers' world championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors were held within nine races from May 20, 1962 to December 29, 1962 .
The FIA honorary title Grand Prix of Europe was awarded to the Grand Prix of the Netherlands in 1962 .
Graham Hill won the Drivers' Championship for the first time. BRM became constructors' world champions for the first and only time.
This season, BRM performed convincingly after a long period of unsuccessful attempts. A double victory in Monza seemed to finally defeat the series of breakdowns and as a model of consistency, Graham Hill won his first world championship, while Jim Clark lost the title he believed to be safe due to a technical defect in the last race.
Another Brit created a sensation: Colin Chapman entered the first Formula 1 racing car with a monocoque and thus laid the foundation for a comprehensive change. Ferrari, on the other hand, had one of its weakest years.
With the Porsche 804 model, Porsche achieved the first Formula 1 victory in the company's history in the Grand Prix of the French Automobile Club in Rouen-les-Essarts .
On November 1, Ricardo Rodríguez had a fatal accident while training in Mexico City in a Lotus. In the Peraltada bend, he crashed into the lane and died on impact.

First, Dan Gurney took the lead in the Porsche 804 as the fastest in training (8: 47.2 min), but was overtaken by Graham Hill on BRM and later by John Surtees on Lola on the third lap after the battery in the Porsche had come loose and had to be held in place by the driver's foot.
Graham Hill won the race; behind Surtees and Gurney came Jim Clark (Lotus), Bruce McLaren (Cooper) and Ricardo Rodriguez (Ferrari) in fourth to sixth place. Joakim Bonnier in the second Porsche 804 was seventh. Graham Hill set the fastest race lap in 10: 12.2 minutes.
