EM preliminary round

At the draw, Denmark as well as Germany and Portugal were drawn among the Dutch, who were second in the UEFA rankings as the group head of Group B. The Danes had a negative record against Portugal with 3 wins, 2 draws and 8 defeats. Both met before in qualifying (see above). Before that, both of them only met at a European Championship finals in 1996: In the preliminary round , the two separated 1: 1. The last game between Denmark and Germany before the European Championship ended 2-2. The overall balance against Germany is negative (9 wins, 4 draws, 16 defeats before the European Championship), but was even at the European Championships (1 win, 1 defeat, 2-2 goals), whereby the victory in the European Championship final in 1992 was a special one for Denmark Has meaning. Against the Dutch, the record is also negative (7 wins, 10 draws, 12 defeats before the European Championship), but was also balanced at the European Championships (1 win, 1 defeat, 2: 5 goals).

Squad

On May 16, Morten Olsen named a preliminary squad of 20 players. The most experienced players in the squad were Christian Poulsen and Dennis Rommedahl , who also played in 2004 . On May 19, Anders Lindegaard was appointed as the third goalkeeper . On May 24th, defender Jores Okore and attacker Nicklas Pedersen were added to the final squad. Since regular goalkeeper Thomas Sørensen sustained a back injury during the defeat in the friendly against Brazil and was therefore unable to play for the European Championship, coach Morten Olsen called Kasper Schmeichel , the son of the Danish national player Peter Schmeichel , as a substitute. 16 of the 23 players from the Danish squad were under contract with clubs abroad at the time of the European Championship finals, with Stephan Andersen, Daniel Wass and Thomas Kahlenberg three were even under contract with a joint club, namely FC Évian Thonon Gaillard , whereby Kahlenberg was only loaner.
