Sankt Georgen am Längsee

Sankt Georgen am Längsee , officially St. Georgen am Längsee , is a municipality with 3576 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of Sankt Veit an der Glan in Carinthia , Austria .

geography

Sankt Georgen is located in the northern Klagenfurt Basin between Krappfeld and Zollfeld . The main settlement area is the Launsdorf depression formed by the Gurk . The municipality extends west of it into the Klagenfurt basin with the Längsee , east into the Brückler Bergland and south to the Magdalensberg .

002 St. Georgen-Südost : includes the villages of Garzern, Gösseling, Hochosterwitz, Kreutern, Labon, Maigern, Niederosterwitz, Pölling, Rain, St. Martin, St. Sebastian, Stammerdorf, Unterbruckendorf, Weindorf, Wiendorf.

history

The history of the area was shaped for a long time by the St. Georgen monastery , which was founded by Wichburg between 1002 and 1008 .

The largest town in the community is Launsdorf, which until the 18th century was called Maria am Sand after the Mariae Himmelfahrt church. Launsdorf was first mentioned in a document in 1103.

The political community was formed in 1850, to which St. Donat initially belonged , which was spun off as a separate local community in 1895 (today it belongs to St. Veit ). The municipality was expanded in 1973 by parts of the dissolved municipality of Meiselding.

In 1868 the Kronprinz-Rudolf-Bahn , which ran through the municipality, was opened, which marked the start of the change from the heavily agricultural to today's tourist municipality .

Population development

According to the 2001 census, Sankt Georgen has 3551 inhabitants, 96.4% of whom are Austrian citizens. 83.3% give Roman Catholic, 6.1% Protestant and 1.3% Islamic affiliation as religion. 6.4% are without religious belief.

In contrast to many other municipalities in Carinthia, St. Georgen had both a positive birth balance and a positive migration balance from 1991 to 2001 and also until 2011 .

Economy and Infrastructure

According to the 2001 census, there are 93 workplaces with 461 employees in the community and 1,265 out-commuters and 270 in-commuters. There are 116 agricultural and forestry holdings (43 of them in full-time occupation, 1999), which together manage 6,624 hectares.

tourism

Tourism is an important economic factor in the entire region. St. Georgen is a member of the associations "Region Central Carinthia", "Norische Region" and "Hemmaland". All of these three partnership associations are based in St. Georgen Abbey.

The Längsee with its very good water quality is the main attraction for bathers in summer.

An 18-hole golf course was built in the municipality under the leadership of the neighboring municipality and district capital Sankt Veit an der Glan and started operating in 2008.

In the front half of the shield of the municipality's coat of arms, St. George is depicted, who, as on the oldest surviving seal, is shown standing as a full figure on a document from 1280. In the lower rear half of the shield, the coat of arms of the taverns of Osterwitz was adopted (silver rafters in black), who built Hochosterwitz Castle in the 12th century as ducal followers and owned it until 1478. Above it is the family coat of arms of the Khevenhüller family with the stalked acorn and the corrugated beam, whose most important political representative, Governor Georg von Khevenhüller, had the castle expanded into today's impressive shape between 1571 and 1586.

The official blazon of the coat of arms reads: “Split shield, in the front field a silver Saint George with a cloak, surmounted by a silver star, a silver sword hung over the right arm, in the raised right a silver palm branch and in the left a silver shield holding with wheel arms. In the rear divided field, the upper half is divided by black and gold; A golden acorn on a two-leaved golden stem growing out of the dividing line at the top, a black wavy band at the bottom. The coat of arms and flag were awarded to the community on August 16, 1965. The flag is yellow-red with an incorporated coat of arms.
