Katjes is the third largest manufacturer in the German sugar confectionery market behind Haribo and Storck . Together with its legally independent sister company Katjes International GmbH & Co. KG and Katjesgreenfood GmbH & Co. KG, Katjes Fassin GmbH & Co. KG is part of the Katjes Group. Katjes only sells vegetarian products.

Company history

1910-1950

On November 23, 1910, Josef Langenberg founded a company in 's-Heerenberg in the Netherlands. The purpose of the company was to trade in chemical products such as flycatchers and coloring agents . 1920 was his stepbrother, Xaver Fassin was added as a partner in the company, which now than Langenberg & Co changed its name. After the death of the founder, Fassin continued the company. In 1930 the production began flycatchers, resulting in the company name de NV Chemische Fabriek v / h Langenberg Co. led.

The production of liquorice was chosen as a winter compensation for the seasonal flycatcher production, as sugar syrup was required as a main component for both products . Fassin, whose ancestors named Fassini came from Sicily, received the recipe from a pharmacist in Catania in 1910 . As a result, production was expanded to include other sugar confectionery such as menthol pearls and peppermint. After taking over molding technology from the plastics industry in the 1930s, the company also produced licorice in the shape of a cat for the first time, the Katjes (Dutch for small cats ), which gave the company its name and its then company logo .

1950-1996

In 1950, Xaver Fassin divided production between his two sons: Helmut Fassin was to continue to manufacture the drawn products in 's-Heerenberg (Langenberg-Fassin BV, since 2005 Fassin BV), Klaus Fassin was to produce the cast products in the neighboring German town of Emmerich. This led to the establishment of the company in its current legal form (Katjes Fassin GmbH & Co. KG). In the Netherlands the company sells a wide range of sweets under the brand name "Katja".

In 1971, Katjes was the first to come up with the idea of making fruit gums with yoghurt (more precisely: skimmed-milk yoghurt powder) and created the yoghurt gums , which are one of the best- selling products in the range today.

One year later, in 1972, today's Katjes International was founded as Fassin Verwaltungs GmbH & Co. Immobilien KG. The Katjes International GmbH & Co. KG , based in Emmerich am Rhein  , together with its legally independent sister company Katjes Fassin GmbH & Co. KG part of Katjes Group, concentrating from 2010 investments of the group in Western Europe (Sperlari, Treets Piast, Dallman, Harlekijntjes, Carambar & Co, Manner).

Since 1988 Katjes has been the first confectionery manufacturer to stop using artificial colors . They were replaced by fruit juices , fruit pulp and coloring fruit and vegetable concentrates.

In 1996 Klaus Fassin brought a non-family manager, Tobias Bachmüller , into the family business as managing director and retired from the management at the age of 65. Bachmüller previously worked as General Manager Suchard at Kraft Jacobs Suchard . He gradually acquired a ten percent stake in Katjes and trimmed the company for growth.

In the following years, growth was achieved both through our own efforts and through the acquisition of German branded goods manufacturers and their brands from the confectionery industry: In 2000, Katjes acquired Villosa , in 2002 Frigeo was bought and in 2003 Glacier Ice from Ragolds followed .

In 2003, Heidi Klum's commitment to Yoghurt Gums TV spots contributed to a 21.4 percent increase in sales. The spot in which she used yoghurt gums as a spacer between her toes to paint her toenails attracted a lot of attention . As a result, 27 million euros were invested in Emmerich to double the capacity.

By 2004, the son of the Katjes founder, Bastian Fassin , had gained experience in other companies ( Roland Berger , Kraft Foods ) after completing his studies and joined Katjes as a managing partner. The areas of responsibility of the company management have been split up so that Bastian Fassin is responsible for product development, production, quality assurance and international business, and Tobias Bachmüller is responsible for marketing, finance and domestic business.

With the license for Granini fruit candies (2005) as the third candy brand, building our own candy factory became interesting. On October 20, 2006, Katjes opened the “first glass candy production in Europe” in Potsdam-Babelsberg after an investment of twelve million euros. Visitors can watch the entire process of candy production from a gallery and shop in the affiliated factory outlet. In January 2007 this concept was named “Place of the Year 2007” by the Germany - Land of Ideas initiative . The previous contract manufacturing of sweets in Finland and Italy was discontinued due to quality problems.

As of autumn 2006, Katjes, as a licensee, also offered Mövenpick chocolate as a premium brand . However, Katjes could not succeed in the chocolate market; Licensor Mövenpick announced Katjes after a year of cooperation.

From 2007 Katjes only used natural aromas in fruit gums instead of nature-identical aromas .

On April 20, 2007, Katjes opened a 70 m² flagship store on the Emmerich Rhine promenade. After a transition period, the previous 120 m² factory outlet in the main factory was closed. Another flagship store was opened in Munich , followed by stores in Aachen and Essen in 2010 . The company now has factory sales in Emmerich and Potsdam.

In November 2010 Katjes took over the majority of Lamy Lutti , a sugar confectionery company with production facilities in Lille , France and Bois-d'Haine , Belgium.

Since 2010 Katjes has been bundling its transports together with the companies Diageo , Leaf , Hitschler and Vidal at the logistics company Fiege . Fiege supplies the food retail trade with the products of all companies involved in the pooling , so that around 30 percent of the truck kilometers and thus also costs and environmental pollution from CO 2 are saved.

Katjes has a large range of vegetarian fruit gums and liquorice and has therefore been the first in the industry to pursue a successful “veggie” strategy for years. The Katjes children were vegetarian right from the start, so in 2010 the company is going back to its roots and focusing on vegetarian products. The green-eared rabbit, a product made from foam sugar and fruit gum, will be launched in 2012 and is the hero product of this vegetarian product line. It is advertised on TV and is becoming a top seller for Katjes. The company gradually adapts all product recipes in the following years. In September 2016, the company became the first German confectionery manufacturer to switch its entire range to vegetarian products. The products are marked as vegetarian with a “Veggie” sticker and bear the official yellow V-Label “Vegetarian” of the European Vegetarian Union. In July 2013, Katjes opened the Katjes café (formerly Café Grün-Ohr ) in the Mitte district of Berlin, the first vegetarian Katjes café, which not only offers coffee but also homemade vegetarian and vegan baked goods.

On August 28, 2015 Katjes is launching the Magic Candy Factory, the world's first food-certified 3D printer for fruit gums, in the company's own Katjes Café Grün-Ohr.

From November 2015 Katjes will take over the Europe-wide marketing and distribution of the WICK cough drops from Procter & Gamble .

Katjes launched a brand campaign across Germany in 2018 to draw attention to the brand's vegetarian range. The “jes! Alles Veggie! ”Attracts a lot of attention and in autumn 2018 won a GWA Effie in gold, an award for the most effective advertising campaigns of the year.

advertising

In the past, Katjes relied on testimonials with celebrities in television advertising . The company preferred advertising debutants. This applies to Stefan Raab , Heidi Klum , Nina Hagen , Dana Schweiger and Alexandra Neldel , among others .

For Yoghurt Gums promoted Stefan Raab (1999), Heidi Klum (2000-2008), Tim maltsters (2007), Lena Gercke (2008), Dana Schweiger (2009), Reiner Calmund (2010) and Alexandra Neldel (2010). While the campaign with Heidi Klum was very successful, the spot with Reiner Calmund, for example, was only used briefly.

Other products of the Katjes Group were also advertised with spots : Stefan Raab (1999) advertised Katjes children , Euro fruit gums , Euro liquorice and Super Bear , Heidi Klum and Lena Gercke for Katzenpfötchen , Hape Kerkeling (2004) for Ahoj Brause , Eva Padberg (2005) for Gletschereis , Dana Schweiger (2009) for Tappsy and Yoguberries .

Nina Hagen campaigned in 2008 on city light posters for Ahoj-Brause . In 2010, Katjes also used poster advertising with Ralf Möller for Sallos X-Treme .

Katjes also ran national sports sponsorship from 2003 to 2008 ( German national soccer team for women ). A television commercial for Yoghurt Gums was also produced with the team . From 2010 to the end of 2016, Katjes (or Katjes International) is the personal sponsor of Formula 1 racing driver Nico Hülkenberg , who comes from Emmerich like Katjes .

In 2007 Katjes sponsored an action by the artist Rainer Bonk , in which 1.80 m glass fiber blanks in the form of a Katjes cat could be painted by students or art lovers and then set up across the city center of Emmerich.

In order to circumvent the advertising ban at the Wimbledon Championships 2011, the German tennis player and Katjes testimonial Julia Görges wore a silver necklace with the Katjes company logo in the first few rounds. This caused a stir and the tournament officials banned her from wearing the jewelry for the rest of the tournament.

From around 2012, Katjes will no longer use celebrity testimonials in its TV spots, but will advertise the product “Green-Ear Bunny” for the Katjes brand, for example with a nibbling actress and a tame rabbit.

From the beginning of 2018, the Katjes brand will use a brand campaign instead of product advertising and advertise on TV, OOH and online with its brand promise “jes! Everything veggie! ”At the beginning of 2019, the pink campaign and the brand promise will be extended with a new motif and an emotional message. "The spot statement 'Every life is valuable' relates on the one hand to the young woman's love for a three-legged dog, on the other hand it also stands for the careful use of nutrition." The problem with factory farming in milk production was also discussed in 2019 in an advertisement for chocolate made from oat milk . There were numerous complaints and Katjes was asked to comment by the German Advertising Council . After the company's statement, the German Advertising Council came to the conclusion that the campaign was not objectionable.

Katjes vs. Haribo

There have been and continue to be numerous legal disputes between Katjes and its strong-selling competitor Haribo. Each company won about half of the cases. Some of these trials have received wide media coverage.

  • A lawsuit against Haribos Katjes was established in April 2004 by the Civil Chamber of the District Court of Dusseldorf ruled in favor of Katjes. Haribo had tried to have Katjes delete the Yoghurt-Gums brand . A comparable product was to be brought onto the market under a similar name. However, the judges decided that Katjes had registered the trademark and used it for years and that it was therefore not justified to expire.
  • In 2009 the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court ruled against Haribo. The company was no longer allowed to print a picture of a child or its slogan “Haribo makes children happy” on adult liquorice packaging. Katjes had obtained an injunction due to unfair competition, which Haribo had contradicted.

Trivia

  • Long before the first licorice cat production at Katjes, there was a manufacturer in Groningen called N (athan) Kater , who advertised their licorice under the name Katjes-Drop from 1882 to 1907 . Apparently the design of the cat was so popular that it was copied by other producers in the Netherlands. This was probably to the great chagrin of the inventor, who in his advertisements strongly advised against consuming the imitated products.
  • Today's main shareholder Bastian Fassin is said to have made a collage at the age of nine with the notation “Katjes, jes, jes, jes” and “Haribo, no, no, no”.
