Günther (first name)
Günther is a male name . There is also the spelling without h as Günter.
Origin and meaning
The name is a subsidiary form of Gunther , from Old High German gund ' Kampf ' and heri ' Heer '. The "ü" shape is likely to have originated in the Middle Ages.
In the first half of the 20th century, the names Günther and Günter were common male first names in Germany, whereby the subsidiary form Günter was not assigned as often as the main form Günther with "h". From 1923 to 1932 he was the most popular male given name in Germany. Use has decreased significantly since the mid-1970s.
