history
The settlement of the places Burgauberg and Neudauberg as well as some other places in the area took place from the neighboring Styrian places. Mainly people from Burgau and Neudau moved to the hills used as vineyards. Due to this historical background, Burgauberg is still a scattered settlement today .
For years the affiliation and responsibility for the localities were not clearly defined. Among other things, it was also necessary to find the borderline between Austria and Hungary, which then became the Lafnitz river ; a border along the range of hills had also been considered. The people themselves had closer ties to the Styrian border communities: the church for the Burgaubergers is still the one in Burgau to this day and for the Neudauberger the one in Neudau, there were also factors such as relatives and common activities. The transnational volunteer fire brigade Burgau-Burgauberg (founded 1875) is an example of the connection between the “Steira” (here in particular the dialect designation for residents of Burgau and Neudau) and the “Bergla” (here in particular residents of Burgauberg and Neudauberg).
In 1795 the villages of Burgauberg and Neudauberg became independent.
Like all of Burgenland, the places belonged to Hungary (German West Hungary) until 1920/21 . Since 1898 had due to the Magyarization of the government in Budapest , the Hungarian place names Burgóhegy and Magashegy be used.
After the end of the First World War , after tough negotiations, German-West Hungary was awarded to Austria in the Treaties of St. Germain and Trianon in 1919. After the Austrian gendarmerie took the Burgenland land on 28/29 In August 1921 there were fights with Hungarian irregulars in Burgauberg, among other places . The place has belonged to the newly founded federal state of Burgenland since 1921 (see also the history of Burgenland ).
During the Nazi period from 1938 to 1945, the communities Burgauberg and Neudauberg were part of Styria (Fürstenfeld district). Up until the end of World War II (in Europe) there was a four-week positional battle in Burgauberg, with the Soviets trying to secure the crossings to Styria and to leave the Güssing hill country behind.
In January 1971 the municipality of Burgauberg-Neudauberg was formed in its current form. In the past, the poor sections of the population lived in Burgauberg and Neudauberg, as the soil was less fertile (no alluvial humus material from streams) and the hill fields were more difficult to cultivate due to the hillside location. Today this is no longer the case, the more affluent population settle on the quiet hills.
