BSG Stahl Calbe - SG Dynamo Hall 11: 8 (6: 5) |
BSG Stahl Calbe entered the game as the defending champion and was considered the favorite over SG Dynamo Halle, which had never been in the final in field handball. However, thanks to good running work and lively attacks, the Halle team quickly started 4-0. But the outstanding national player Werner Assmann ensured that BSG Stahl took the lead 6: 5 for the first time before the half-time break. After that, the people's police became nervous and unfocused, while the steelworkers used their powerful attack game to further expand the lead and kept the opposing attackers at bay by cleverly switching between space and man covering. these also failed due to goalkeeper Ernst Napp, who increased during the game. BSG Motor Rostock - BSG Locomotive Gera 13: 4 |
With dreamlike security and sophisticated technology as well as with accurate players, the BSG Motor Rostock was a superior opponent that the SG Dynamo Halle had nothing to oppose. With constantly changing moves, the Rostockers didn't give the Halleers a chance and in the end they achieved a well-deserved victory. Outstanding players from BSG Motor were the 43-year-old goalkeeper Quednow and field players Klaus-Dieter Matz, Massow and Günter Mundt. ( Berliner Zeitung , February 17, 1954, p. 4)
Women (field handball)
In the field handball season 1953/54, the GDR women's champion was determined for the first time by the GDR league. This was played with back and forth games from September 1953 to April 1954 with nine teams, including the finalists of the previous season, the company sports associations (BSG) Einheit Weimar (champions) and Motor West Leipzig. The new title holder was the BSG Progress Weissenfels. Since the GDR league was expanded to 14 teams in the 1954/55 season, there were no relegated teams in 1954.
