Heinz Richter (born July 24, 1947 in Schlegel ) is a former cyclist from the GDR . In 1972 he won an Olympic silver medal in the team pursuit .

Life

Richter began as an ice hockey player in Zittau and switched to cycling at the age of 17 . After he was third in 1964 and second in the GDR youth championship in individual road driving in 1965, he moved to SC Dynamo Berlin in 1966 , where he trained with Rolf Nitzsche , who also originally came from Zittau. In 1967 Richter won three GDR championship titles: in the time trial over 1000 meters , in the individual pursuit and in the team pursuit. Richter successfully defended all titles in the following year. At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , he retired with the GDR foursome in the first round of the team pursuit, and in the time trial, he finished tenth.

In 1969, Richter drove three international matches against the Netherlands , Italy and the USSR in the 4,000-meter team pursuit for the GDR's rail country selection . Together with Thomas Huschke , Bernhard Gruner and Bernd Schreiber, he won all three races. Against Italy, the GDR four-man set a new German record for the GDR with a time of 4: 29.4 minutes as well as the world's best for cement railways. At the end of the respective comparisons, the GDR won 8: 7 against the Netherlands, 8.5: 6.5 against Italy and lost 8.5: 9.5 against the USSR. In August 1969 Richter started at the World Track Championships in Brno in the 4,000 m team pursuit competition. In the same line-up as in the previous international matches (Huschke, H. Richter, Gruner, Schreiber), the GDR team reached fifth place in the qualification in 4: 37.13 minutes. In the quarter-finals, the four then met the USSR. Despite an increase to 4: 32.73 minutes, the GDR team lost 81 hundredths of a second against the USSR and thus missed the semi-finals. In the same year Heinz Richter won his third GDR title in the time trial and in the individual pursuit.

From 1970 to 1972 he fought three times in a row for the GDR title in two-man team driving together with Thomas Huschke . At the 1970 World Cup , Thomas Huschke, Heinz Richter, Herbert Richter and Manfred Ulbricht reached the final in the team pursuit. After the victory of the West German four-man, Richter received his first international medal with silver. A year later, the four from Italy and the GDR faced each other in the final; Huschke, Herbert Richter, Heinz Richter and Uwe Unterwalder again took second place. The GDR foursome won the third silver medal at the annual highlight in a row in the same line-up as in 1971 at the Olympic Games in Munich behind the foursome from the Federal Republic of Germany.

Heinz Richter, known as "Heiri", was a trained fitter. He completed his apprenticeship as a locksmith in East Berlin's RAW on Revaler Strasse. After his sporting career, he switched from the People's Police to the People's Army , where he was a cycling coach in Prora . After the reunification in the GDR , he opened a bicycle shop in Bergen on Rügen .

In 1972 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze for his athletic achievements .
