Heuvelland (German Hügelland ) is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region with 7909 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). The 159 meter high Kemmelberg is the highest point both in the municipality and in west Flanders. This hill and the individual villages of the municipality of Heuvelland were the scenes of fierce battles between German and Allied troops in the First World War , which were particularly characterized by large infantry attacks against heavily developed positions defended by machine guns , gas wars , mine warfare , prolonged artillery fire and first dogfights .
Between Wijtschate and Voormezele is Bayernwald , a German site from 1914 ( ) , which is now accessible to visitors and which has been restored on the basis of archaeological studies .
