Location of Hooksiel in Lower Saxony

The coastal resort of Hooksiel is part of the municipality of Wangerland in the district of Friesland , the part of the East Frisian peninsula that historically belongs to Oldenburg . The place name is based on the designation "Hook" for nose or projection and the term Siel as the identification of a Sielortes.

geography

The place is about 14 kilometers north-northwest of Wilhelmshaven and 10 kilometers northeast of the district town of Jever at an altitude of 1.5 meters above sea level on the Inner Jade . The Hooksieler Tief , a watercourse that drains the hinterland and leads into the Hooksmeer , runs through the village . This sea is an artificially created lake that flows into the North Sea a few kilometers east of the town at the “New Harbor” . Hooksiel Beach , which is around 3.5 kilometers long, runs parallel to the inland depression .

In front of Hooksiel is the Hooksielplate sandbank , which is equipped with a radar and direction finding system and is part of the Jade and German Bight shipping traffic safety system .

history

"Old Harbor" of Hooksiel, on the left the storage houses from 1821

Hooksiel was first mentioned in a document in 1479 as "uppe dem Hoeke". A sluice structure with a harbor can be found at Hooksieler Tief since at least 1546 . Hooksiel was built on the initially uncovered sluice open at the top, which soon developed into a transshipment port for the nearby merchant town of Jever and the entire Jeverland . In 1588 the open wooden pole was replaced by a new wooden pole with a closed construction, although shipping traffic to Jever was made more difficult by reloading the goods. Due to its wooden construction, the sewer had to be renewed several times over the years. During the Napoleonic Continental Blockade from 1806 to 1814, the port flourished, especially as a transhipment point for smuggled goods imported from the then British Heligoland . The listed warehouses and packing houses on the north side of the “Old Harbor”, which were built in 1821 and are still in existence today, bear witness to the earlier economic importance of Hooksiel. In 1885 the wooden handle was replaced by the existing stone handle at the "Old Harbor". Nevertheless, the port lost its importance as a transshipment point at the end of the 19th century and became a port for cutter fishing. In 1911 a bathing club was founded and initiated the first tourist measures, such as adding sand for a bathing area and setting up a poison booth . The Hooksiel lido developed from these beginnings.

Hooksieler lock and outer harbor

From 1971 the mudflat area before Hooksiel was diked as part of the land reclamation measure for the Voslapper Groden . Several hundred hectares of new land was won east of the village. Today there is a 240 hectare recreational area with a trotting track , tennis courts, riding and hiking trails. North of the new dike line on Hooksieler Sea Dike, the approximately four kilometer long, fine sandy beach Hooksiel has been stretching since then . For further drainage of the Hooksieler Tief, an artificial lake of around 60 hectares, the Hooksmeer, was created between the “old port” and the new outer port . The Hooksmeer is connected to the new, tide-independent outer harbor on the Jade via a sea lock.

On July 1, 1972 Hooksiel was incorporated into the newly formed municipality of Wangerland on February 1, 1971.

In 1984 the long-term “redevelopment measure for the center of the historic Sielhafenort Hooksiel” was tackled. In the course of the renovation program, many historic houses were restored in style. The L 810, which originally ran directly through the town center, was led around the town in 1998 via a bypass , so that the heavy holiday and excursion traffic to the coastal and seaside resorts north of Hooksiel could be kept out of the town center. This was followed by the redesign of the old “Lange Straße” thoroughfare and, from 2005, the construction of a parallel relief road called “Nee Straat”. At the "Nee Straat" the new central bus station of the place was built, a multi-purpose place u. a. for the weekly market as well as other local parking facilities for visitors. After the completion of the “Nee Straat” in 2008, a short section of the “Long Street” was declared a pedestrian zone on a trial basis during the main season . Due to positive feedback after the trial operation, it was permanently designated as a pedestrian zone in March 2009.

With a "contract on the future development of Hooksiel" between the state of Lower Saxony , the district of Friesland and the municipality of Wangerland , a two-and-a-half year dispute about the non-award of the North Sea bathing title for Hooksiel was ended on December 28, 2010. The reason for the dispute were fears that an award would have negative effects on industrial development in neighboring Wilhelmshaven . In the compromise , Hooksiel renounces the North Sea bath rating and accepts the lower value rating coastal bathing resort . In return, the state of Lower Saxony is providing funds for a 230-meter-long pier at the outer harbor of Hooksiel. The pier serves several purposes, on the one hand as a tourist attraction comparable to the piers in the German Baltic Sea resorts, on the other hand it is supposed to prevent the sand drift into the outer harbor and the associated silting up of the harbor approach. Furthermore, it also opens the way for the expansion of the Hooksieler Hafen into an assistance harbor for the JadeWeserPort . At the beginning of 2014, construction of the pier in Hooksiel could still not be started, as the Lower Saxony State Agency for Water Management, Coastal Protection and Nature Conservation (NLWKN) is initially calling for a one-year model test to clarify whether the pier prevents the silting up of the Hooksiel port approach at all.

Military history

The guest's house, formerly the position of the gun battery, with a former moat

During the First World War , the Hooksiel battery was part of the defensive ring around the port of the Kriegsmarine in Wilhelmshaven. The battery consisted of a 60 m long and 10 m wide casemate with a depth of 4.5 m. There were four 15 cm caliber guns on it. The complex was secured with a water-filled trench, barbed wire barriers and trenches. After the war, the building was closed as part of German disarmament. The Hooksiel heavy flak battery was built during the Second World War . In the casemate with a 2 m thick concrete ceiling, units of the naval flak were stationed, on it three flak guns of the type 8.8 cm were placed. An 8 m high fire control bunker was also built. The entire military installation was hermetically secured by grenade launchers and machine guns . In addition to soldiers, naval helpers (students) were also deployed in later years of the war .

In 1984, on the former military site on the outskirts, a green area was created with a circular path around the still-existing fortress moat. In the middle of the site, the "Haus des Gastes" was inaugurated in 1993, which partly stands on the old foundations of the casemate.

Population development

Hooksiel had around 2150 inhabitants at the beginning of 2009. During the holiday season, the actual number of residents is far exceeded by the holiday guests present. The following table gives an insight into the historical development of the population:

year Residents
1806 450
1861 1,048
1864 1,017
1867 990
1875 826
1880 904
1961 1,535
1970 1,599

Culture and sights

Culture

In the middle of the historic center of the small harbor town is the artist house Hooksiel . Since 1986 it has played an important role in the field of art and culture mediation: exhibitions by contemporary artists, grants lasting several months with an apartment and workshop, cultural offers for children and adults as well as cultural trips. The special attraction of this facility in the municipality of Wangerland results on the one hand from being “far away” from metropolises, on the other hand from the presentation of high-quality art in rural areas.

Attractions

Former town hall with onion dome, today the artist house Hooksiel

The center of Hooksiel has numerous historical buildings, the most striking of which is the former town hall and today's shell museum. In the past, the building served as a school and from 1986 to 2011 as an artist's house. The Shell Museum has been housed there since 2012. On the roof there is a centuries-old onion dome with a gold-plated weather vane with a Luther swan from 1760. The tower was a gift from a British captain who thanked a Hooksiel shipyard for the repair of his ship. In 2008 the old onion dome was replaced by a faithful replica for 49,000 euros. Most of the sum was raised through private donations.

In the center of the village is the listed old port with its storage and packing houses from 1821. The new port was relocated outside of the town with land reclamation measures in the 1970s. The Hooks flows deep into the old harbor through the Hook- Siel . The sewer structure, built in 1885, drains an area of 56 km².

Unlike in most places, Hooksiel Church is not in the old town center of Hooksiel, but in the much older village of Pakens, around two kilometers away . The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Holy Cross was built in the 2nd half of the 13th century. The church made of granite ashlars is located on a high warf at the end of "Pakenser Straße", which begins right in the center of Hooksiel. Worth seeing are the three- bay domical vault , the sandstone altarpiece from 1691 and the baptismal font with decorations carried by three well-fed putti . The organ from 1664 comes from the well-known organ builder Joachim Richborn and was colorfully painted in 1679 on behalf of the Hooksiel doctor Hans Otto von Marpe.

A so-called mudder boat can be viewed on the dike on the south side of the Old Harbor . It was from 1837 to the 1950s to eliminate Verschlickungen used the harbor entrance of Hooksiel. The access to the outer harbor is still regularly decongested today.

Since May 2016, the bronze sculpture Fischer's son will sea, created by Norbert Marten , has stood directly in front of the Künstlerhaus . The sculpture shows a large fish that is being chased by a person wearing a diving mask , flippers and a swimming ring. The couple was initiated by the Friends of Art and Adventure Path Hooksiel eV and supported by sponsors.

Regular events

The Hooksieler Race Days of the Hooksieler Rennverein e. V. are a series of horse races that are held on the local jade racetrack during the main season in July / August. The competitions take place on Wednesday evenings on three days of racing. The last day of the race is organized as a so-called family race day on a Sunday and, in addition to the actual horse races, offers a colorful supporting program with a horse-drawn carriage parade, additional cold-blooded and pony races and a hat competition for spectators.

Economy and Infrastructure

economy

The most important branch of the economy is tourism . In addition to tourism, there are also craft and business settlements in the village. Some of these companies have settled in the two industrial parks of Berghamm and Schwarzhamm , which were designated in 1996 and 1998 . Commercial space with a total size of 8.3  hectares is available here.

There is a year-round seawater indoor wave pool in the village. The Hooksiel water ski lift is a special feature . It was built in 1979/1980 at Hooksieler Binnentief near the outer harbor. The circuit of the four-mast system is 830 meters with a roller height of eight meters. The system has 10  drivers , so that 10 water skiers could ski at the same time. One circuit takes around 2 minutes at an average speed of 32 km / h. Spectators can also watch the sport on an outdoor terrace.

Hooksiel has a 4-star campsite , which is located on the outside dike directly on the North Sea and offers plenty of space for caravans and mobile homes. The campsite has a share of more than 30% permanent campers and in 1999 received the award "Exemplary campsite in Lower Saxony".

Hooksiel is connected to the federal motorway 29 , junction 4 Fedderwarden , via the L 810 . The A 29 runs from Wilhelmshaven to the Ahlhorner Heide motorway triangle , where it meets the A 1 . In the Hooksiel area, the L 810 is bypassed around Hooksiel and continues via Horumersiel to Schillig on the northeastern corner of the East Frisian peninsula.

Hooksiel is part of the Weser-Ems Bus through various bus routes , which lead to Wilhelmshaven, Horumersiel, Schillig, Jever and Hohenkirchen, among others. However, some trips, especially in the evenings and on weekends, only run by prior arrangement. Hooksiel is in the tariff area of the Ems-Jade transport association .

fire Department

The Hooksiel volunteer fire department has been one of the local fire departments in the municipality of Wangerland since 1972 . It was founded in January 1923, during the National Socialist era the Hooksiel volunteer fire brigade was suspended, the fire protection was regulated by the fire fighting police and after the end of the war the comrades resumed their service as the Hooksiel volunteer fire brigade. Today the Hooksiel volunteer fire brigade consists of three departments and a development association . D. 2013).

Rescue station of the DGzRS

The new rescue cruiser Bernhard Gruben

In 1874 the first rescue station of the German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) was set up in Hooksiel, which was on the old sewer until 1930 .

Since 1994 there has been a DGzRS station again, which was set up at the new outer harbor. In contrast to the past, a modern rescue cruiser is stationed for sea rescue instead of a rowing lifeboat , which is manned around the clock. The BERNHARD GRUBEN , a 23.1-meter class cruiser (built in 1996) replaced its predecessor VORMANN STEFFENS in 2018 , which had been in service for almost 30 years.
