Horná Ždaňa (until 1927 Slovak also "Horná Ždáňa"; Hungarian Felsőzsadány - until 1892 Felsőzsdány ) is a municipality in the center of Slovakia with 537 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Žiar nad Hronom , part of the Banskobystrický kraj , heard.

geography

The village is located in the Žiarska kotlina basin on the central reaches of the Hron , on the eastern slope of the Vogelgebirge in the Prochotský potok valley . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 296  m nm and is 12.5 kilometers from Žiar nad Hronom .

Neighboring municipalities are Prestavlky in the north, Dolná Trnávka in the east, Dolná Ždaňa in the south, Bzenica in the south-west, Hrabičov and Ostrý Grúň in the west and Prochot in the north-west.

Horná Ždaňa was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1391 as Sdan and at that time it belonged to the territory of the Revište Castle . After the Dóczy family died out , the Schemnitzer Bergkammer was responsible for the administration of the place . In 1601 there were two country estates, a manor and parish mill and 37 houses. In 1715 the village had a mill and 38 taxpayers, including six craftsmen. In 1828 there were 48 houses and 324 residents who were employed as farmers.

Until 1918, the place in Bars County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, Horná Ždaňa preserved its agricultural character. In the spring of 1945, in a retaliatory action by the Wehrmacht, 35 houses were set on fire and adult men were dragged off to the concentration camps. After the Second World War, a large part of the population worked in industrial plants in the region and in forests.

According to the 2011 census, there were 546 inhabitants in Horná Ždaňa, including 526 Slovaks , four Roma and one Magyar and one Czech . 14 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .

447 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 10 residents to the Evangelical Church AB and one resident each to the Brethren and the Seventh-day Adventists. 60 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 27 residents was not determined.
