state North Rhine-Westphalia

The Hunau in the broader sense denotes the natural area of the mountain range of the mountain Hunau, which reaches 818.5 m above sea level, together with its foothills in today's area of the cities Schmallenberg and Winterberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis , North Rhine-Westphalia. Depending on the demarcation, it covers an area of around 55 to 58 km².

location

The Hunau massif is located from the city center to the facing side, a good 5 km northeast of Schmallenberg , just as far west-northwest of Winterberg and about twice as far south-southeast of the district town of Meschede . On the south-western edge are Bad Fredeburg , Huxel and Holthausen , the eastern south is framed by the Sorpe with the hamlets (upstream) Mittelorpe , Obersorpe and Rehsiepen , the east by the Neger flowing north with Siedlinghausen in the northeast, the north by the Bödefelder Mulde with Altefeld , Brabecke , Bödefeld as well as Westernbödefeld (a bit apart) and Gellinghausen , on the north-western edge, on the Rarbacher district, the hamlets of Dornheim , Föckinghausen , Oberrarbach and Oberhenneborn , in the west is Altenilpe .

The only localities in the interior of the natural area are the hamlet Osterwald and the adjoining residential areas Sonderhof and Rimberg with a total of just 100 inhabitants in the Osterwalder Mulde . Like almost all peripheral towns, they are located in Schmallenberg's area (Gellenhauser district); only Siedlinghausen and Altefeld belong to Winterberg today. In the past, the places in the north and in the interior formed the freedom Bödefeld and the municipality of Bödefeld-Land , whereas the villages on the southern edge belonged to the parish of Oberkirchen until 1975 .

Natural allocation

The Hunau is naturally allocated as follows:

Neighboring natural areas are the Nordheller Heights (333.57) in the east, the Bödefelder Mulde (333.80) in the north, the Henneborner Täler und ridge (333.84) in the northwest, the Fredeburger Kammer (335.1, main unit Sauerländer Senken ) with the Fredeburger Hügelland (335.11) and the Schmallenberger Grund (335.10) in the southwest, the Lennekessel (333.6) in the eastern south and the Astenberg (333.54) in the southeast. In the south-east there is a Seken area, which Martin Bürgener assigned to the Nordheller Heights in 1963, but which geomorphologically should be assigned to Harfeld ( Winterberger Hochmulde , 33.56); there only the Langenberg (734.8 m) and its east summit Festerbachskopf (727.8 m) reach heights of over 700 m at a distance; their saddle for Astenberg solid is 688.8 m with significantly higher than that for Steinberg (728.1 m) in the western part of the North Heller heights which is located at 649.9 m.

Characteristic

Seen from the center of the Rothaargebirge, which stretches from southwest to northeast, as the 841.9 m high Astenberg (333.54) on the Kahler Asten can be seen, the Hunau forms a kind of northwest wing, while that at 816.1 m ( goat light ) is the Hunau almost equal massif of Ziegenhelle forms the southeast wing. While the Ziegenhelle has only three other elevations that are more than 50 m high and are therefore to a certain extent independent mountains, at Asten there is only one other peak (the 811 m high Bremberg ), there are several in the Hunau massif Individual mountains and side massifs clearly separated - with up to three-digit heights.

The main ridge

Natural spatial map of the Hunau and its surroundings ( larger section )
The Zwellenberg (734.3 m), southern second summit of the Schiershagen

Like the Ziegenhelle in Wallershöhe , the Hunau also has a second summit that is almost the same height. However, the east summit, which is about 1.25 km away and reaches 812.1 m, does not even have a well-known name (the German basemap from 2011 only has a small, italic writing Hundegrab ). From the eastern summit via the Namentliche Hunau to the Heikersköpfchen (892.7 m), the main ridge hardly loses height over a distance of almost 4 km and does not have any noteworthy gaps. Towards the Kahlenberg, the ridge flattens to 712.3 m, only to drop off sharply northeast of Fredeburg.

At the east summit, on the other hand, the ridge gradually tapers to the east or south-east (ridge to Astenberg at 697.5 m), but continues in a north-east direction without any notable interruption to Sange 2.5 km away (788.8 m) and also flattens out in the northern Riedeln only very gradually. Only the Hömberg on the far north-east edge is carved out by a very clear notch, but at 714.9 m it is nowhere near the height of its western neighboring peaks.

South of the main ridge, on the other hand, the pre-peaks are often already separated by certain gaps, but do not protrude very far towards Lennekessel and Schmallenberger Grund.

Osterwalder Mulde and edge ridges from north to west

The Osterwalder Mulde immediately to the north, parallel to the main ridge, ensures that between the Palme in the east and the Brabecke in the west, which will only come together in the Bödefelder Mulde near Westernbödefeld , a striking ridge around the Schiershagen (736.6 m) is carved out. This ridge may have been called Kohlhagen earlier ; in any case, the stream that sweeps into its interior is called Kohlhagensiepen .

The ridge to the west, with the Rimberg (713.1 m) in the south and the Bracht (725.7 m) in the north, is still separated to the south by a clear notch at the Osterwalder depression; here, however, there is another deeper gap between the two mountains mentioned.

The Hömberg (661.4 m) in the north west of the massif is a special case. Its notch height is almost as large as that of the Hunau itself and it locks the Oberrarbach basin around Oberrarbach to the northwest. Orographically, it is the main mountain, one of the clods of the north-western neighboring natural area of the Henneborn valleys and ridge , and it is also located in the catchment area of the upper Henne and the Rarbach , which are almost completely in that natural area. In addition, the Oberrarbach basin is very typical of the numerous depressions in this natural area.

Martin Bürgener placed the Hömberg as part of the Hunau, but declared the natural boundary as not linearly definable - although it can be done in two ways (however, excluding the Hömberg and the basin, it is much clearer). What it has in common with the mountains of the Hunau massif is, above all, the continuous forest and the height: the southwest part of the Henneborn Ridge otherwise only reaches a height of just over 600 m on one mountain ( Somberg : 615.8 m). If only the north-eastern part of the Henneborn Ridge with Goldenes Strauch (653.6 m) and Ehrenberg (621.3 m), which still has clear similarities with the less filigree Ramsbeck Ridge and gorges , were counted as part of the Rothaar Mountains, then one would count the Hömberg certainly not to exclude and put accordingly to the Hunau.

To the west of the main ridge, the massif is closed off by the Buchhagen up to 660.9 m , which has the shape of a horseshoe open to the northwest, from which the Buchhagener Bach , left source brook of the Henne, flows, while the right, nominal one, between Buchhagen and Hömberg the Mountain range leaves.

Waters

The watershed between the Upper Ruhr and the Upper Lenne runs over the main ridge of the Hunau . The south side drains via Gleierbach and Sorpe to the Lenne, the more expansive north side via Neger , Elpe , Valme and Henne to the Oberruhr. Only a small area around the core town of Bad Fredeburg in the southwest drains via the Leiße to Wenne , which flows around the Rothaargebirge as a typical valley river at some western distance.

The following table contains the most important surveys of the Hunau together with height above sea level, dominance and prominence ; the brightness of the background (brightening from 2 km dominance or from 80 m prominence) indicates the respective independence as a mountain:
