action
Apart from constant financial worries, the young couple Jared and Sam lead happy lives in the Bahamas . While Sam is working at an amusement park, Jared has quit his job as a diving instructor and dreams of finding treasure on the ocean floor. One day, Bryce, a childhood friend of the couple, came flying over with his new girlfriend, Amanda. The defense attorney received a villa and a yacht from one of his clients. The four of them go on a diving excursion with the ship. They discover the remains of a long-sunken ship and an airplane wreck, fully loaded with cocaine . While Jared is mainly interested in the ship, Bryce and Amanda dream of making a quick buck with the help of drugs. It was agreed, however, that it would be better to leave the plane alone and not to notify the police, in order not to endanger the discovery and recovery of the ship, because the ship is said to have been used to transport gold.
The recovery of the ship requires a lot of technical equipment that the four cannot finance. Therefore, Bryce and Amanda decide to secretly salvage some of the cocaine and turn it into money. They offer it to the club owner Primo, who takes them to his boss, the drug lord Reyes, who is already missing his cocaine. Jared is then called onto Reyes' yacht and given twelve hours to recover and hand over the remaining cocaine, otherwise all four would die.
Back on land, Jared explains the situation to his girlfriend Sam. However, this does not want to have anything to do with drug deals and leaves him. So Jared, Bryce and Amanda go to the rescue alone. During the night diving action, Amanda is attacked by a tiger shark and seriously injured. Jared and Bryce abandon the dive and take Amanda to a hospital, where they can no longer be helped. In the hospital, Sam joins them again. They are about to go home together when they get a call from Primo. He wants to know if they have the drugs. This leads to a chase, at the end of which Jared faces the gangsters, Sam asks the cop Roy for help and Bryce goes into hiding.
Primo brings Jared onto Reyes' yacht. When Jared is able to get rid of his shackles, he discovers that everyone on board - including Primo - has been murdered. Jared examines the boat and meets his former employer and intimate enemy Bates, who explains to him that his business partner Reyes wanted to betray him and therefore had to die. And now Jared is also to die; However, this manages to escape. In the meantime, Roy has convinced Sam that it is better not to go to the supposedly corrupt police chief, but to go to Bates. Bates, who now has Sam under his control, uses them as leverage against Jared. Together with Bryce, he forges a plan to free his girlfriend and put Bates down. So he agrees to show the criminals the crash site. Once there, an underwater fight develops, at the end of which Jared and Bryce manage to blow up the drug plane and its contents, whereby Bates is killed.
Six weeks later, Jared, Sam and Bryce are seen recovering an old ship cannon. A rope breaks and the cannon sinks back down, where it breaks through the wooden deck of the sunken ship, revealing a load of gold bars hidden below.

criticism
"The nicely illustrated, narrative but very lame and illogical underwater thriller has little to offer, and the performance of the actors can hardly brighten the overall picture."
“This is just a movie for people who want to see Jessica Alba in a bikini all the time. The thin story is ancient and follows almost identical works like The Depth , but compared to that it is absolutely unexciting and unspectacular. Some promotional videos about diving expeditions have more to offer. Even the sometimes great pictures of the Caribbean cannot tear anything. Apart from boring body photography, nothing remains here. "
“The role models on which director John Stockwell orientates are easy to identify. Thematically, his film would like to be a modern update of the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean , imagery and macho behavior are reminiscent of Im Rausch der Tief , which also combines aesthetically pleasing underwater shots with a plot that never questions and unconditionally romanticizes the male protagonists and their potency-controlled actions. Fortunately, Into the Blue is not as unbearable as Luc Besson's over-ambitious, chauvinistic work, as the film doesn't take itself too seriously for a second and never wants to be more than an entertaining popcorn cinema with sharks, drug dealers - and of course Jessica Alba in a bikini. "

In the sequel, which was released as a direct-to-DVD production, the couple meets Sebastian ( Chris Carmack ) and Dani ( Laura Vandervoort ), who own a dive center , Carlton ( David Anders ) and Azra ( Marsha Thomason ). The two couples want to look for the wreck of the Spanish ship San Cristobal together , but the journey turns out differently than expected. In the film adaptation were u. a. Audrina Patridge and Mircea Monroe as well as the two survivor opponents Amanda Kimmel and Parvati Shallow in front of the camera. Robert Duncan was responsible for the music in the sequel.
Trivia
- The underwater scenes of the film were too revealing for the strict US moral guards. In particular, Jessica Alba's bikini panties were too tight for them in these scenes. That's why the cinema trailer had to be digitally reworked so that her bottom was completely covered under water. The film itself was shown uncensored worldwide, including the USA.
- The plot is roughly based on the novel The Riff by Peter Benchley . This novel was filmed in 1977 under the title The Depth with Nick Nolte and Jacqueline Bisset .
