- Great Britain: The English hospital ship "Rewa" sinks in the Bristol Channel, probably by running into a mine.
- Namibia: The explorer Reinhard Maack discovers the at least 2000 year old rock carving White Lady in the Brandberg massif .

- Washington, DC : US President Woodrow Wilson presents fourteen-point program to bring about general peace.

Saturday 19th January 1918
- Thames: The English training ship "Warspite" burns
- St. Petersburg: Decree on the dissolution of the Constituent Assembly - it is dissolved by force by the Bolshevik government (possibly the end of the February Revolution )
Sunday January 20, 1918
- Istanbul: Advance of the Turkish cruisers "Sultan Javus Selim" (formerly "Goeben") and "Midilli" (formerly "Breslau") against Imbros (today Gökçeada) . The English monitors "Raglan" and "M 28" are destroyed, the "Midilli" sinks (mine hit), the "Sultan JS" temporarily gets stuck in the narrows of Nagara on the way back.

- North Sea: The German mine boats "A 73" and "A 77" are destroyed by mines.
- Mediterranean: The English auxiliary cruiser "Louvain" is torpedoed in the eastern Mediterranean.

- Ukraine : Mychajlo Hruschewskyj , historian and politician proclaims the first autonomous republic. The country becomes an independent people's republic: Ukrajinska Narodnja Respublika (UNR).

- Ireland: The English Cunard steamer " Andania " is torpedoed on the way out not far from the Irish coast. All inmates are saved.

Monday, January 28, 1918
- Germany: January strike - mass strikes against the world war and its effects (in Berlin and other German cities, where the German negotiating commission called for a quick peace agreement in Brest-Litovsk "without annexations and contributions", a democratic right to vote as well as better food supplies and other things become). Appeal by the revolutionary stewards . In the armaments factories in Berlin and the surrounding area, 100,000 workers take part on the first day.

- The English transport steamer "Minnetonka" (13,528 tons) is sunk
- Paris: First scheduled air raid on the night of January 31 (given reason: to retaliate against enemy air attacks on open German cities outside the area of operations)
