Carmelite Monastery Maria Schnee

The Maria Schnee monastery is a convent of the Discalced Carmelites in Grazer Grabenstrasse in the third district of Geidorf . The monastery is located at the foot of the Reinerkogel , a little off Grabenstrasse. The Maria Schnee monastery and pilgrimage church is located in the inner courtyard of the monastery.

history

As early as 1553, a forest chapel Maria Schnee was first mentioned as a place of pilgrimage. The formerly bourgeois late baroque property is dated to the year 1687.

The old Carmelite monastery on Karmeliterplatz was closed in 1789 as part of the Josephine reforms (today the Styrian State Archives ). In the 1840s the Carmelites settled back in Graz by purchasing the property (since 1842 owned by the order); previously an attempt by the Discalced Carmelites to acquire the monastery had failed (they built the convent of St. Joseph not far at the foot of the Rosenberg ).

When the Carmelites rebuilt their Konvikt in Graz, the building was extended and converted into a monastery by Georg Hauberrisser the Elder , the architect of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche , from 1844 onwards during the late Biedermeier period .

During the Nazi regime , the premises of the monastery served as the home of the Graz regional music school of the Hitler Youth .

The paintings in the corridors of the north wing originally come from the Carmelite Monastery in Vienna and were transferred to Graz in 1876. The "large prayer choir " in neo-Gothic design has an altar from 1859 including an altar sheet with a representation of the Holy Trinity , created by Fr. Romäus. The standing cross with an ivory body comes from the end of the 17th or the beginning of the 18th century. In the north wing there is a “small prayer choir” with a winged altar (around 1833) including a depiction of the Lamentation of Christ made of sheet copper, designed by the artist AI Wonsiedler.

Maria Schnee monastery church

history

The former pilgrimage church Maria Schnee is located in the inner courtyard of the monastery. An image of Mary has been venerated in it since the 16th century, which for a long time was regarded as the image of the miraculous image of the Roman Church of St. Mary of Santa Maria Maggiore . The former forest chapel was replaced by a rococo chapel between 1765 and 1670 and attached to the originally bourgeois house. The miraculous image is carried by angels and is located in the high altar of Maria Schnee. The measurement permission was granted 1755th In 1842, after the Carmelite Order had established a convent , the Maria Schnee church became a monastery church.

Architecture and design

The sacred building is a medium-sized building with an apse , which is attached to the monastery in the southeast. The facade, dated 1770, is attributed to Joseph Hueber . The two-bay nave is entered through a basket arch gate.

In the high altar is the Mariahilf miraculous image from the 16th century. On the flanks there are side figures depicting Mary's parents, Saints Anna and Joachim . The neo-baroque tabernacle has a relief of Holy Communion, which was designed by Erwin Huber. The side altars come from the workshop of Veit Königers and were made around 1770. Between 1810 and 1820 the pulpit was created with Empire decor. In the church interior there are numerous paintings with depictions of apostles and saints.
