License plate (Algeria)
Algerian license plates are based on the former French license plates that were issued until 2009. Front signs have a white background, those at the rear have a yellow background, and the inscription is black. The license plates start with a five-digit serial number, which can also show leading zeros. This is followed by a three-digit number, the first digit of which indicates the vehicle class (e.g. 1 = car). The other two digits encode the year of first registration according to the model 14 = 2014. The label ends with the number of the Wilaya in which the vehicle is registered. Algeria is therefore one of the few countries whose standard license plates consist exclusively of digits. Following the example of the euro plate, there are also blue bands on the right or left edge of the plate in Algeria, which have the nationality symbol DZ for Arabic الجزائر (al- D scha z ā'ir) show. Occasionally the flag of Algeria is alsoshown.
Temporary signs start with six digits, followed by 00 and the Wilaya number. Diplomatic license plates show black letters on a dark green background. They start with the letters CD or CMD followed by two groups of digits. Marks of the armed forces show the Algerian flag in a circle and black background.
