The 800-meter race of women in the 2001 World Championships in Athletics was from 9 to 12 August 2001 Commonwealth Stadium the Canadian city of Edmonton held.

Maria de Lurdes Mutola from Mozambique won her second World Cup title after 1993 , the 2000 Olympic champion and the 1996 Olympic champion . She also won silver at World Championships in 1999 and bronze in 1997 . In addition, it was four times African champion ( 800m : 1990 , 1993 , 1998 / 1500 meters : 1990). As at the Olympic Games last year, Austrian Stephanie Graf won the silver medal. At the finish she was only three hundredths of a second behind Maria Mutola. Third place went to the vice world champion in 1995 and third in the 1999 World Cup, Letitia Vriesde from Suriname , who also won the 800-meter run at the 1999 Pan-American Games .

Preliminary round

The preliminary round was held in four runs. The first three athletes per run - highlighted in light blue - as well as the four fastest runners - highlighted in light green - qualified for the quarter-finals.
The first heat was the fastest of all heats with a tightly packed field at the front, so that all participants who qualified for the semi-finals via the time rule came out of this race.
