history
The place was first mentioned in 1264 when Ruprecht von Neu Liebstein was a judge in Eger . Liebenstein was created in the valley below the castle of the same name from the 13th century. In 1292 the local noble family of the Liebensteiner died out and the rule was given to the Pressbergers. In 1298, the Waldsassen monastery acquired Dietrich von Pressberg's property. In the 14th century, the owners, which included the Landgraves of Leuchtenberg , changed several times. In 1426 the Zedtwitzer on Neuberg acquired the rule from Hans von Sparneck . Until 1945, Liebenstein was the seat of a Zedtwitzer line that was raised to the rank of imperial count in 1790 .
After the castle was devastated in the Thirty Years' War in 1647 by Swedish troops under Carl Gustav Wrangel and Arvid Wittenberg , reconstruction began in 1719. The complex was redesigned as a Rococo castle around 1770.
From the middle of the 19th century, Liebenstein belonged to the judicial district of Eger , which was part of the Eger district until the First World War .
After the Munich Agreement , the place was added to the German Empire and belonged to the district of Eger until 1945 .
After the Second World War, the German residents were expelled. The castle was nationalized and used by the Czechoslovak army , but it deteriorated. In the 1950s the place name was changed from Libštejn to Libá . With the construction of the border security systems during the Cold War, the villages and hamlets on the border were demolished.
After the fall of the Iron Curtain, the Czechoslovak state no longer had any use for the run-down property and sold the castle to a private investor. After a third of the roof had been re-covered, the renovation that had begun had to be stopped in 1998 due to financial problems.
