The name recalls the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin , which Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote in 1853 in protest against slavery . Based on this novel, a restaurant opened in 1885 on the former Riemeistersee (demolished in 1979) was called that. The first innkeeper was called Thomas; he had built huts in his beer garden as protection from the weather. These were called Tom's huts . Since the name of Beecher-Stowes novel was on everyone's lips, the name Uncle Tom's Cabin came about. | cards | |

When the canal was filled in from 1926 and the canal trench was converted into a garden based on plans by Erwin Barth , the bridge became superfluous and removed.
